PARENTS GUIDE ONLINE

November 2008

Dear NYU Parents,

After two months of settling in, November is the time for looking ahead--to final exams, to winter break, and to a new semester. In this newsletter, we offer you some information and resources particularly appropriate to the season. As always, feel free to contact us at the Parents Helpline (212.998.4219) or via email at parents@nyu.edu about these or any other issues.

ACADEMIC RESOURCES
Now that we have reached the mid point of the semester, some students may be struggling to meet their academic goals or experiencing stress over their workload. This is especially true for first-year students who can have trouble adjusting to the more independent, work-intensive environment of college level courses. This is a good time to check in with your student with open ended questions about his academic experience. What is her favorite class? What is one new thing he has learned? If your student needs assistance, you can point him to NYU's many academic support resources:

  • The College Learning Center offers free tutoring and group review sessions in many core courses.
  • Students can work closely with a professional writing consultant on any piece of writing except for exams at The Writing Center, or meet with a Reference Librarian to develop a research strategy for term papers.
  • The Student Health Center offers workshops and support groups on Stress Management, Time Management and other skills for college success.
  • Encourage your student to meet with academic advisors and take advantage of professors's office hours to discuss academic goals, explore career paths, and pursue new interests.
  • If a student is having trouble managing stress or other emotions, the Wellness Exchange is available 24 hours a day at (212) 443-9999.

PLANNING FOR BREAKS

Special scheduling notes for the end of the semester:

  • Wednesday November 26th is a "Legislative Day," meaning that classes run on a Monday schedule. (This makes up for the Mondays lost to other holidays earlier in the semester.)
  • The university closes for Thanksgiving break from Thursday November 27- Sunday 30th.
  • The official university finals period runs December 15th - 19th, but individual schedules vary. Some students may have only one (or no) in class exams, so students should check the University Finals Schedule and consult with their professors now to determine when their true last day of the semester will be.
  • Winter break runs from December 20-January 17; Spring Semester begins January 20. Register now for Winter Session classes, January 5 - 17.
  • Is your student staying in the city over Thanksgiving or Winter break? Residence halls (but not dining halls) are open, and there will be plenty of activities to keep students busy. Check the SRC website for guides to events on and off campus during the breaks.
