Dear NYU
Parents,
Looking back over the past year, we can't help but feel amazed
by everything our students have accomplished in such a short
time. We congratulate you on your student's sucesses, from
the small victories to the major achievements, and wish you
both all the best this summer.
The Parent's
Helpline Newsletter will resume in September. After three
years with us, Jay Gundacker will soon leave Parents Services
to return to school full time, so if you have any last questions
for him, please contact him by May 22nd. After that, you can
still reach the rest of us throughout the summer at the Parent's
Helpline (212.998.4219) or via email at parents@nyu.edu.
FINALS
AND FINAL GRADES
The last day of Spring classes will take place on Monday,
May 4th, followed by a one day break ("Reading Day")
before the official exam period, May 6 - May 12. Exam times
are scheduled by class meeting time, however some professors
may hold exams during regular class hours or require a final
paper instead.
Final grades will be posted to Albert, the online student
information system, as soon as they are received from professors.
Students can also use Albert to print a copy of their grades
or to request that a paper grade report be mailed to their
permanent address on file. Please be patient with professors,
who may have many dozens of final projects to grade. If a
grade has still not posted 2 weeks after the end of exams,
your student should follow up with his or her professor.
RESIDENCE
HALL MOVE OUT
If you and your student have not yet made plans for move out,
please see our April
newsletter, which includes tips and information for residence
hall check out. Many students underestimate the time it will
take to clear out their rooms, so you may want to encourage
your student to begin packing their belongings at least a
few days in advance of moving out.
SUMMER
SESSION
A wide range
of classes are offered during the summer for students
who want to explore new academic areas, focus intensively
on particular interests, or speed their progress to graduation.
Most classes are offered during one of two sessions, either
May 18 - June 26 or June 29 - August 7. Summer
Housing is also available.
FOR
PARENTS OF GRADUATING SENIORS
By now, seniors should have reserved tickets for Commencement,
ordered academic
attire and scheduled
a portrait sitting (if interested). They should also make
plans for other important tasks that can easily be overlooked
during this busy time, such as returning library books and
closing campus cash accounts. New graduates should also
update their permanent address (by signing into Albert) to
ensure they receive their
diplomas and alumni
cards in the mail.
FOR PARENTS OF RISING SOPHOMORES
Whether a student has lived at home all school year or returns
after a year away, the summer after freshman year can find
parents and students clashing over expectations. You hope
to spend the summer reconnecting with your son, but he is
more interested in visiting friends. Your daughter wants to
share her new insight on politics, but seems to have forgotten
how to work the washing machine. And the most common complaint
of all: the student who stays up all night and sleeps all
day. Although there are no formulas for ensuring an easy transition,
coming to agreements early can head off many problems. Take
the opportunity to talk to your student now about schedules,
chores, obligations, and expectations for the summer.
LOOKING AHEAD TO FALL 2009
The semester is just ending, but the summer will be through
before you know it. Fall tuition payments for undergraduates
are due on August 10, 2009. All residence halls will open
for Fall 2009 on Sunday, August 30th, but many returning students
will move in closer to the first day of classes on September
8th.
STUDENT
HEALTH: SWINE FLU
The Student Health
Center (SHC) at NYU is closely monitoring the recent reports
of human cases of swine flu throughout the world. While there
have been no cases of swine flu at NYU, the SHC will continue
to work with federal and local public health agencies and
NYU administration to allow NYU to be as proactive as possible
in addressing this public health issue. To date, students
have been notified via Email Direct and signs are being posted
in public facilities, residences, bathrooms, and classroom
buildings. For additional details click here.
