Dear NYU
Parents,
The new semester may have just started, but the time to plan
for next fall is now. In this newsletter, we focus on some
important deadlines for both returning and graduating students.
Still have questions? Please contact us at the Parent's Helpline
(212.998.4219) or at parents@nyu.edu.
HOUSING
Does your student plan to live in a residence hall next year?
If so, please make note of Housing Lottery procedures for
returning students. Strict payment and paperwork deadlines
begin this month, so don't hesitate to contact our office,
Housing, or Financial Aid if you have any questions or concerns.
If your student will be looking for a new off-campus apartment,
check out the Office of Off-Campus Housing's Off-Campus Housing
Guide for advice on navigating the NYC rental market.
FINANCIAL AID
If your student would like to be considered for financial
aid for next year, it's time to file a FAFSA
form (priority deadline March 1). The
Office of Financial Aid will also hold workshops
on maximizing eligibility and avoiding common mistakes in
the application process for students in upcoming weeks.
CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2009
Is your student preparing to graduate in the spring? Remind
him or her to apply
for graduation by phone as soon as possible to avoid missing
out on vital information or even a delayed graduation date.
You and your student can both visit the
Commencement website for details about ceremonies, tickets,
academic attire, and much more. Graduating Seniors are also
strongly encouraged to attend the annual
100 Nights Before Commencement event on February 10th
for vital information about commencement week and beyond.
STUDY
ABROAD
Studying abroad can be not only a personally rewarding experience,
but also a chance to develop language skills and new perspectives
that will wow prospective employers. NYU's ten global sites
(including London, Florence, Accra, Buenos Aires and Shanghai)
offer state-of-the-art facilities and classes that meet NYU
requirements, making it even easier to stay on track for graduation.
The application deadline for Fall 2009 is February 17th.
SPRING BREAK
Spring Break will take place from March 16-21. Residence halls
will remain open, but dining halls will close, and other services
may run on a limited schedule. Check the Student Resource
Center website in early March for our Spring Break Guide,
everything your student will need to know to take a "stay-cation"
in New York City this year.
SUMMER
SESSION
Registration for summer classes will begin on February 9th.
Summer is a perfect time to explore new subjects or take core
courses to speed academic progress.
Summer housing applications will be available this month
as well.
STUDENT
LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Many student leadership programs are currently recruiting
for next year. These activities are a great way to get connected
to the university community, build new skills, explore interests
and career paths, and make friends. Applications are currently
open for several
Peer
Education programs and for
Welcome Week Leader and Captain positions. Commuter
Assistant applications will go live in mid-February, and
Student Government Elections
will take place in late March. Meanwhile, the Office of Student
Activities offers ongoing
Leadership Initiatives for all students, and the
eVita portfolio system to keep track of achievements in
a format that will appeal to future employers.
