December 2008

Dear NYU Parents,

This month, we offer you some useful information as we wrap up the fall semester and prepare for a new year. Please contact us at Parents Helpline (212.998.4219) or via email at parents@nyu.edu with any additional questions.

FINALS & WINTER BREAK
Below is important information about final exam schedules and NYU during the Winter Break:

  • The last day of classes is Thursday, December 11th, followed by Reading Day on Friday, December 12th. On Reading Day, there are no classes or exams so students can prepare for finals.
  • Final Exams run from December 15-19. Exams are scheduled by class time (schedule), but some professors may require a final paper or hold an exam on the last day of class instead, so doublecheck with your student about her schedule.
  • Finals week is a great time to send your student a care package of treats and news from home. If you prefer to send a professionally made gift, consult the Inter-Residence Hall Council of NYU or the Parent's Guide websites for options.
  • Winter break for students runs from December 20th to January 19th. NYU offices such as the Parents Helpline will be closed from December 24th to January 4th, and January 19th for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Most dining halls are closed from December 19th to January 19th, and meal plans are not available until dinner on January 19th.
  • Will your student be in the city over winter break? All residence halls remain open and staffed. Other facilities operate on a limited schedule. For information about winter break on campus and in the city, check the Student Resource Center's Winter Break Guide, available at www.nyu.edu/src beginning Thursday, December 11th.
  • Winter Session classes run from January 5th - 17th. Registration is still open.

GOING ABROAD?
If your student is preparing to go abroad, you both are probably feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness.

  • Did you know that the Study Abroad office will hold an online chat on December 10th for parents of students who are about go abroad? Ask a question, or just hear what is on other parents' minds. You can also always visit the Study Abroad message boards for general and site-specific information.
  • Wondering what you'll do with your student's stuff while he is abroad? In some cases, it is cheaper and easier to mail unwanted items back home than to store them in Manhattan. In other cases, a storage unit is the best solution. See our list of storage companies on the Student Resource Center's Neighborhood Resources page.

FOR SENIORS
For those students who are about to enter their last semester at NYU, now is the time to think about commencement and life beyond.

  • Remind your senior to apply for graduation via TorchTone, the University's telephone registration system, preferably by January 30th.
  • Particularly in this economy, it's important to start the job search early. Students can visit the Wasserman Center for Career Development for help with resumes, job searching, interviewing, and much more.
  • All-University Commencement is Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Yankee Stadium. Each school also has its own ceremony and additional details can be found at www.nyu.edu/commencement, including tickets, academic attire, and related activities.
