April at NYU is one of the busiest months of the year as students work on papers, projects and prepare for the soon-to-end semester. Spring is eagerly awaited and students are taking advantage of every opportunity to be outdoors as the unpredictable weather begins to warm and the park begins to bloom. Our April newsletter provides updates on academic resources, the housing reapplication process, summer, graduation events, career development, and end of the year transitioning.
2013-2014 UNDERGRADUATE HOUSING REAPPLICATION PROCESS - PHASE 2
April continues with the reapplication process for students who completed Phase 1 and made their reservation payment. Phase 2 (April 15-19) is the room selection process where students will choose their room for next year. Additional information on the room selection process is available on the Residential Life and Housing Services website (click here). For questions -- call 212-998-4600 (M-F, 9am-5pm, EST) or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
REGISTRATION for FALL 2013
Registration for Fall semester 2013 starts on Monday, April 22, 2013 - actual appointment date and time will vary by a student's academic standing. Now is a good time for students to check for any holds that might affect registration. For more details on the registration process, visit the University Registrar's website.
TUTORING, WRITING, and RESEARCH
NYU's Academic Resource Center is a "one-stop shop" for academic support and home to the University Learning Center which offers workshops, group review sessions, and free tutoring. Additionally, students can work closely with a professional writing consultant on any piece of writing (except for exams) at The Writing Center, or meet with a Reference Librarian to develop a research strategy for term papers.
THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2013
Last month graduating students received information about graduation events and the various procedures to help them prepare for this momentous occasion. Just a reminder that students will need to order tickets for individual graduation events, as well as their academic attire. The following deadlines are approaching:
~ Deadline to order Academic Attire online: April 22 (pick-up begins May 14)
~ Deadline to order Commencement tickets - May 10 (pick-up begins May 14)
~ Deadline for School Ceremony tickets - varies by school (click review by school)
For additional details on all events, go to www.nyu.edu/commencement.
STORAGE, SHIPPING, and MOVING
To help with planning for moving out of the residence halls at the end of the semester, the Student Resource Center has complied a listing of commonly used storage facilities, as well as storage search websites on the Neighborhood Resources page - please note that NYU has no affiliation with any of the resources provided. We have compiled this listing to help you in your search. Additionally, students should ask for suggestions from their residence hall front desk (Resource Center) staff.
Also note that per residence hall policy, students are required to check-out of their residence hall within 24 hours of their last exam; so now is a good time to ask your student about their exam schedule.
MEAL PLANS, DINING DOLLARS, and CAMPUS CASH
As we approach the end of the Spring semester, now is a good time for students to review their Dining Dollars and/or Campus Cash balances. Dining Dollars that are not used by the end of the semester are forfeited. Campus Cash balances however, will roll-over for returning students and refunds may be requested for graduating students. More details will be available in the May newsletter for the donation of extra meals to local charities.
RESUME BOOK COLLECTION
Students graduating in 2013 & 2014 are eligible to participate in the May Resume Book Collection provided by the Wasserman Center for Career Development. Resumes are reviewed and collected for distribution to hundreds of employers throughout the summer and fall.
INTERNSHIPS & FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT
Students can research job and internship listings and apply through NYU CareerNet. For individualized support, students may also schedule an appointment with their Wasserman Center for Career Development career counselor who can assist in developing a job search strategy, review resumes, and facilitate mock interviews to help achieve your student's career goals.
