Dear NYU Parents,
With less than one month left in the semester, most students
are consumed with final exams, term papers, and making summer
plans. (See our November
newsletter for academic resources.) For seniors, feelings
of pride and excitement can mix with sadness over leaving
friends and anxieties about the next step. Now is a great
time to send a care package to your student, or a note of
encouragement acknowledging their accomplishments this year.
As you work to support your students, we're here to support
you. Contact us at the Parents Helpline (212.998.4219) or
via email at parents@nyu.edu
with your questions and comments, or your suggestions for
future newsletters.
RESIDENCE
HALL MOVE OUT
Unless they will
transition into on-campus summer housing, students are
expected to move out of their residence halls the day after
their last spring exam (exams will vary by student; see
general schedule here).
If your student has any concerns about meeting that deadline,
he or she should contact their residence hall staff as early
as possible.
Every spring, we receive many questions about "the best
option" for moving out of residence halls. Storage in
the city? Shipping items home? The answer depends on individual
circumstances and priorities. Please click
here for tips on move-out and links to local storage and
mailing companies.
REGISTERING
FOR FALL 2009
Registration
for Fall 2009 classes begins April 20th, with registration
times assigned based on the number of completed credits. Students
must meet with an academic
advisor before registering. Encourage your student to
make
the most out of his or her advising visit.
SUMMER
SESSION
A wide range
of classes (including programs abroad)
are offered during the summer for students who want to explore
new academic areas, focus intensively on particular interests,
or speed their progress to graduation. Most classes are offered
during one of two sessions, either May 18 - June 26 or June
29 - August 7. Summer
Housing is also available.
COMMENCEMENT
All-University
Commencement will take place Wednesday, May 13 at Yankee
Stadium--just one month away! Now is the time for graduating
students to make travel plans, to request tickets for all
university commencement and school
ceremonies, and to order academic
attire. Students can also make use of the Wasserman
Center for Career Development in searching for a post-graduation
job and the Office for Off-Campus Housing in searching for
an apartment in the New York area.
PREPARING FOR LIFE AFTER NYU - INSURANCE
Just as at the start of college, graduation can mark changes
and new challenges in the parent-child relationship. In Letting
Go: A Parent's Guide to Understanding the College Years,
Karen Coburn and Madge Lawrence describe the difficulties
facing many families as parents and recent graduates negotiate
new issues of independence and interdependence, particularly
around finances. They encourage families to speak openly
about expectations and limitations of the material support
they will provide after graduation.
One way parents can assist is by helping students think through
their resources and options. Continuing health insurance
coverage is one issue that comes up for many new graduates.
Although students with NYU's health plan maintain coverage
into August, others may be dropped from their parents' plan
soon after graduating. The website "NextPATH"
offers useful
general
information about health insurance options for
parents of recent college grads.
