NYC Summer Events

 

Summer is a great time to explore NYC and surrounding areas! You are receiving this newsletter because you are participating in a summer program or are living in a residence hall at NYU Washington Square. If at any point during the summer you want to unsunscribe from this list, please follow the instructions at the bottom of this e-mail. Each week, we'll update you on great happenings around NYU and NYC:

Movies

Brooklyn Film Festival
Friday, June 1st to Sunday, June 10th | Various venues throughout Brooklyn
The 15th annual festival will debut over 100 films with feature, short, documentary and animation projects competing for several awards and prizes.

Open Roads: New Italian Cinema
June 8th through 14th | Walter Reade Theater, 165 West 65th Street
Fall in love with Italian films this summer at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Student tickets are $9.

Special Advanced Screening of Rock of Ages
Tuesday, June 12th | Pick up a pass at Ticket Central, 556 LaGuardia Place
Pick up a free pass to the advanced screening of Rock of Ages at Ticket Central, while supplies last. Only students with a valid college student ID will be allowed to pick up a pass. Limit (2) per person.

Music and Performances

Toyota Concert Series: Chris Brown
Friday, June 8th | Rockefeller Plaza
Chris Brown will sing live on the TODAY show as part of their Toyota Concert Series.

Shakespeare in the Park: As You Like It
June 5th through 30th | Delacorte Theater, Central Park, enter from 81st Street and Central Park West or 79th Street and Fifth Avenue
Tickets are FREE and are distributed, two per person, at the Delacorte Theater at 1:00pm the day of the show, or online the day of the show through the Virtual Ticketing lottery.

Good Morning America Summer Concert Series
Fridays throughout the summer from 7:00am to 9:00am | Central Park Rumsey Playfield
GMA's Summer Concert Series, sponsored by Pepsi Co., returns for the fourth year to the Rumsey Playfield in Central Park, where music's biggest names will perform live every Friday. Performances are free and open to the public. Note: Viewers interested in joining GMA for the concerts should arrive at Rumsey Playfield via the 72nd street Central Park entrance on Fifth Avenue at 6:00am when the park opens to the public. The line-up includes:
June 8: Counting Crows
June 15: Beach Boys
June 29: LMFAO

Kids

Movies in the Park: Happy Feet Two
Friday, June 8th from 7:00pm to 11:00pm | Rochdale Park, Queens
Bring a chair or blanket and come for a free outdoor showing of "Happy Feet Two." Children can also enjoy craft projects and popcorn.

High Line Kids: Second Saturdays with the Children's Museum of the Arts
Saturday, June 9th from 10:00am to 12:00pm | On the High Line between West 22nd and West 23rd Streets
Stop by this monthly drop-in art workshop for kids, where they can craft their own masterpieces.

Kids in Motion
Saturday, June 9th from 11:00am to 4:00pm | Maria Hernandez Park, Brooklyn
Join Parks for a fun-filled day of fitness and sports for kids! Kids in Motion is a free event with sports like double dutch, street hocket, volleyball, bike lessons, an obstacle course, yoga and zumba.

Sports and Fitness

Shape Up NYC: Intensati
Thursday, June 7th from 5:30pm to 6:3opm | Hudson River Park Pier 46
This revolutionary workout fuses high energy aerobics, martial arts, dance, yoga and strength conditioning. Attendance is limited to 75 people on a first-come, first-served basis.

Kayaking on the Hudson
Saturday, June 9th and Sunday, June 10th from 10:00am to 5:00pm | 72nd Street and Hudson River, Riverside Park, Manhattan
Join the downtown boathouse for free 20-minute instructional paddles, and explore the Hudson River first-hand. No registration required.

Biking Tour with Urban Park Rangers
Saturday, June 9th at 10:00am | Orchard Beach Nature Center, Section 2 of Orchard Beach, Bronx
Urban Park Ranger cycling guides will introduce you to some of the most famous parks in the world. Rides are free, but you must provide your own bicycle, and helmets are required.

Exhibits, Classes, and Lectures

Free Guided Walking Tours of the High Line
Every Tuesday at 6:30pm | 14th Street Passage on the High Line at West 14th Street
Enjoy a guided tour of the High Line this summer! Space is limited, so arrive early to guarantee a spot!

Beastie Boys Photo Exhibit
Now through June 21st | Ivy Brown Gallery, 675 Hudson Street #4N
This photography exhibit featires rare images of the Beasty Boys.

Cloud City
Now through November 4th | Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 5th Avenue
This summer, the rooftop of the Met will feature a cutting edge exhibit from artist Tomás Saraceno.

Doodle for Google 2012 Exhibit
Daily through July 19th | Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, Stokes Gallery, New York Public Library, Fifth Ave and 42nd Street
Youths in grades K through 12 submitted their own version of the Google logo for this year's competition themes "If I could travel in time, I'd visit..." See the finalists from each state as well as the winning image.

Parades, Fairs and Festivals

Big Apple BBQ Block Party
Saturday, June 9th and Sunday, June 10th from 11:00am to 6:00pm | Madison Square Park
Come celebrate America's authentic culinary and musical traditions at the 10th annual Barbeque Block PArty. Admission is free, and barbeque is sold for $8 a plate.

Figment
Saturday, June 9th and Sunday, June 10th from 10:00am to 6:00pm | Governors Island
Figment is a free, annual celebration of participatory art and culture, transforming Governors Island into a large-scale collaborative artwork.

The Annual Village Fair
Saturday, June 9th from 10:00am to 6:00pm | Broadway from Houston to Grant Street
This annual fair features vendors with food, jewelry, clothing, apparel, crafts and more.
