NYC Summer Events


Welcome to the NYU Summer City Guide, a weekly e-mail highlighting events to help you make the most out of your summer in the city! You are receiving this newsletter because you are participating in a summer program or are living in a residence hall at NYU Washington Square. If at any point during the summer you want to unsunscribe from this list, please follow the instructions at the bottom of this e-mail. Each week, we'll update you on great happenings around NYU and NYC:

Advance Screening of Chernobyl Diaries
Thursday, May 24th | Location TBA upon ticket pick-up
Students with a valid college student ID can pick up a pass to a free advance screening of Chernobyl Diaries the night before it comes out in theaters. Pick up your pass while supplies last from NYU Ticket Central, open Tuesday through Saturday from 12:00pm to 6:00pm.

Movies in the Park - "Hugo"
Friday, May 25th from 7:00pm to 11:00pm | Frederick B Judge Playground, Queens
Bring a chair or blanket and come out for a free outdoor showing of "Hugo." Children can also enjoy craft projects and popcorn.

Music and Performances

Alan Gilbert Conducts: Free Annual Memorial Day Concert
Monday, May 28th at 8:00pm | The Cathedral of Sain John the Divine, 112th Street and Amsterdam Ave
Tickets are first-come, first-served and available the day of the performance at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine. Tickets will be handed out at 6:15pm.

Good Morning America Summer Concert Series
Fridays throughout the summer from 7:00am to 9:00am | Central Park Rumsey Playfield
GMA's Summer Concert Series, sponsored by Pepsi Co., returns for the fourth year to the Rumsey Playfield in Central Park, where music's biggest names will perform live every Friday. Performances are free and open to the public. Note: Viewers interested in joining GMA for the concerts should arrive at Rumsey Playfield via the 72nd street Central Park entrance on Fifth Avenue at 6:00am when the park opens to the public. The line-up includes:

June 1: Brad Paisley
June 8: Counting Crows
June 15: Beach Boys
June 29: LMFAO

92Y Harkness Dance Center's Fridays at Noon
Fridays from 12:00pm to 1:00pm | 92nd Street Y Buttenwieser Hall, 1395 Lexington Ave
Three to four choreographers show finished or in-progress choreography with audience discussion at the conclusion of the performance. Performances are free and first come, first serve. Doors open at 11:50am.

Birding Tours of Bryant Park
Thursday, May 24th from 5:00pm to 6:00pm | 42nd Street and 6th Avenue
Discover the varieties of birds that call Bryant Park home during the migratory season with guided tours.

Family Art Project at Wave Hill
Saturday, May 26th from 10:00am to 1:00pm | Wave Hill, W 248 St & Independence Ave, Bronx
See the emergence of the latest incarnation of the Family Art Project's Puppet Theater! Guest artist Tomoe Matsuoka remakes the theater before your very eyes. Make your own mini river-diorama starring your own hand-crafted Hudson River fish.

Kayaking on the Hudson
Saturday, May 26th from 10:00am to 5:00pm | 72nd Street and Hudson River, Riverside Park, Manhattan
Join the downtown boathouse for free 20-minute instructional paddles, and explore the Hudson River first-hand. No registration required.

Bike New York: Learn to Ride
Saturday, May 26th, Sunday, May 27th and Monday, May 28th at 10:00am | Various Locations
It's never too late to learn to ride! Lessons are available for children and adults at various locations across the city.

Memorial Day Walk Tour
Monday, May 28th from 1:00pm to 3:00pm | Maine Monument at Columbus Circle, Central Park West and 59th Street
Combine a walk through Central Park with a look at hor different generations of New Yorkers viewed the Park as a proper place to remember their veterans.

Exhibits, Classes, and Lectures

Grand Central Terminal Walking Tour
Friday, May 25th at 12:30pm | Grand Central Terminal, 120 Park Ave at 42nd Street
Take a free tour of Grand Central Terminal with the Grand Central Partnership and learn about the idiosyncrasies of the terminal and its surrounding neighborhood. Meet in the sculpure court at 120 Park Ave.

Doodle for Google 2012 Exhibit
Daily through July 19th | Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, Stokes Gallery, New York Public Library, Fifth Ave and 42nd Street
Youths in grades K through 12 submitted their own version of the Google logo for this year's competition themes "If I could travel in time, I'd visit..." See the finalists from each state as well as the winning image.

Parades, Fairs and Festivals

Fleet Week New York 2012
Wednesday, May 23rd to Wednesday, May 30th | Various Locations around New York City
This year, Fleet Week, the city's celebration of the sea services, celebrates the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. Fleet Week includes dozens of military demonstrations and displays throughout the week as well as public visitations of many of the participating ships.

Lower East Side Festival of the Arts
Friday, May 25th to Monday, May 28th | Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave
Poets, playwrights, puppeteers and other performers in and around the Lower East Side will partake in this 17th annual gathering centered at the Theater for the New City.

5 Boro PicNYC
Saturday, May 26th and Sunday, May 27th from 11:30am to 4:30pm | Governors Island
This inaugural two-day picnic kicks off Governor Island's food-and-drink festivities for the summer. Take the free ferry from either Manhattan or Brooklyn and taste samples from more than 20 vendors, listen to live blues music, and check out the hot-sauce tastings or sausage cook-off. Tickets are available for $25 on their website.

World Science Festival
Wednesday, May 30th and Sunday, June 3rd | Various Locations around New York City
The 5th annual World Science Festival will be an extraordinary celebration of scientific discovery, bringing together the best and brightest minds in science, along with artists and performers, authors and policymakers, for a range of events throughout New York City and on NYU's campus. The five day festival will feature 50 unique programs on topics including gaming and robotics, creatinging and the brain, and cosmology and urban stargazing. Tickets are on sale on the festival's website, and NYU students can purchase $12 to events taking place at the Skirball Center by using the promo code "NYUSTUDENT" at checkout.
