Safety Tips

When you are in trouble, help is only a phone call away! If you are witness to a crime or experience an emergency on campus, dial (212) 998-2222 - 24 hours a day - to reach the NYU Public Safety. NYU Public Safety provides information and on-campus emergency help. Off campus, NYU Public Safety provides all practical assistance or immediate referral. The following are some tips to keep in mind while in the area . . .

  • A green light on a NYU building indicates a 24-hour guard in the building lobby.- It is important to be alert and to avoid, if possible, isolated areas in the buildings. Notify guards immediately of any of any unusual circumstances.
  • Secure your keys and other personal items (purse, backpack, etc.). Never leave your property unattended.
  • If you are attacked or confronted, make a scene. Scream "FIRE!".
  • If you hear a scream of see a struggle, get help immediately.
  • Have a friend accompany you to sparsely populated areas such as rest rooms.
  • If you must work alone at nights or on weekends, notify the Public Safety dispatcher (212-998-2222) of your location and telephone number.
  • Report the loss of keys, equipment, or valuables. Change locks immediately.
  • Always report attacks or attempted attacks on or off-campus to Public Safety.
  • Observe as much as you can about an assailant. Note any details that will help in identification. Don't walk or sit alone in secluded or poorly lit areas.
  • If you are going out alone, let someone know where you are going, and what time you are planning to return. Call if you are going to be late.
  • Always have enough money for cab fare.
  • Wearing or flashing jewelry will identify you as a potential victim.
  • Be aware of all-night delicatessens and other safe locations.
  • Look oncoming passerby in the eyes. An assailant does not want to be identified.
  • In the subways, stay back from the track and near the change booth. Know how to get to your destination. Ride in the conductor's car.

Be aware that there are CULT groups recruiting new members in and around campus. If you feel that individuals or groups are trying to inappropriately pressure you into being their friend or joining their group, discuss, the matter with someone you know well and trust before you get involved.
