Academic Credit
Does this course count as an elective in the MSW or PhD program?
Yes, this is a three credit elective, which counts towards either the MSW or the PhD degree requirement.
What if I want to graduate in May 2012, can I take this course?
You have three options. You can take this course for credit to fulfill your graduation requirements. You will be able to participate in all graduation activities, including the convocation ceremony. Students who have completed all other degree requirements prior to the course may request to retroactively receive a May degree, to be issued following completion of the course requirements; alternatively, students who have completed all other degree requirements by completion of the course would graduate in September.
Or, you could graduate in May and take the course as an alumnus, at the reduced fee, for no credit but you will earn CEUs. However, reduced-fee students are not given priority for admission or housing.
Is there a language requirement?
No, the course will be conducted in English. NYU offers free language learning opportunities through Speak Freely if you would like to have an introduction to or brush up on your French language skills.
The course is an "intensive" - what does that mean?
Three credits worth of material will be covered in a condensed timeframe over a few days of classes. So, that means that students will be expected to attend all classes and that the duration of the class will in large blocks of time. While scheduling has not been finalized, class sessions have been typically scheduled in the afternoon for up to 6 hours, including breaks. We often continue to discuss material at cafes after class. There are some days without classes scheduled.
Course Requirements -
Attendance at all sessions of the course, assigned readings, and written assignments are all required. Due to the intensive nature of the course, students will be provided the syllabus sufficiently in advance of the start of the course so that they may complete the assigned readings prior to departure for Paris. The written work required will be detailed in the syllabus. Students usually have several weeks following the course to complete the written assignments.
How do I register for the course?
Only students who have been accepted to the course and have paid their deposit will be allowed to register, once Summer Session registration begins. Students accepted to the course will be given registration instructions. Acceptance is your guarantee of a spot in the course.
Expenses
What does the tuition cover?
The tuition and fees only covers the cost of the course. For students enrolled at NYU wishing to receive academic credit for the course, the cost covers three credits and associated fees. For non-matriculated students, or students who do not want academic credit for the course, there is a 1/3 reduction compared to the for credit tuition cost.
How much is housing?
In conjunction with the course, single occupancy studio apartments are available for rent through a landlord connected to NYU who runs an international student residence. The tentative cost is $60/night. There are many options for subletting apartments and rooms as well as hostels and other student residences throughout Paris. Non-NYU housing prices are equivalent to NYC.
Are there scholarships for this course?
No, at this time there are no specific scholarship funds designated for this course.
Is financial aid available for this course?
Those students who are currently receiving Federal Financial Aid may apply for financial aid using the NYU Office of Financial Aid resources. Summer courses require that students apply for summer financial aid.
Non-NYU students, as per federal regulations, are not eligible for financial aid through NYU. However, non-NYU students should contact the financial aid office at their home university to find out if they are eligible for financial aid through a consortium agreement.
Do I have to pay for my travel to and from Paris?
Yes. Students are responsible for booking and paying for their own travel, including to the student housing from the airport.
Do I have to arrange my own travel?
Yes, students are responsible for arranging their own travel to and from Paris. Students may wish to check with STA Travel, an organization that offers student discounts on airfare and other aspects of foreign travel. Their website is: http://www.statravel.com/home.htm
Do I have to pay for my own meals?
Yes, no meals are provided at the student housing or through the course.
What incidental expenses might I incur?
If you stay in NYU student housing, you will need to pay for subway travel, a packet (un carnet) of ten tickets costs about $17 to travel to NYU Paris campus. You will need to pay for meals, laundry, and any activities outside of the course. We may offer extra-curricular group activities, which will be an additional cost. Housing is also an expense not covered by tuition.
Housing
Do I have to stay in NYU student housing during the course?
No, you are welcome to arrange for your own housing in Paris.
Can I share a room with another student, my spouse/partner/child/travel companion?
No, NYU student housing is strictly SINGLE OCCUPANCY. You will sign a housing contract when you arrive and it explicitly prohibits you sharing the space with another individual.
Can I arrive in Paris before the start of the program?
Can I stay in student housing when the program is over? If you are staying in NYU housing, the check-in date is June 5, 2013. All students must check out of student housing by June 19, 2013. All students staying in NYU housing in Paris must check in and out on these dates.
Where is the student housing?
The primary student housing available for the duration of the course is in the Oberkampf neighborhood, in the 11th Arrondissement. The studios are in an international student residence with an RA on site. Each room has a bed, closet, desk, chair, folding table and chair for eating, a small kitchenette with a cooktop, fridge, and microwave, private ensuite bathroom and shower, and free Internet access. There is laundry and a small exercise room onsite. The Oberkampf neighborhood is much like Williamsburg, Brooklyn with lots of nightlife, shopping, and restaurants all in walking distance. There is a great café two doors down in which most staff speak English. Some students may be placed at a second site with similar accommodations.
Travel
I would like to travel with other students. How can I find out who is going on the trip?
After students have been accepted to the program, they will be given the opportunity to connect with other students who are interested in traveling together. Students will also have a chance to meet other program participants at the pre-course orientation.
I have never been to Paris. I would like more information about the city, weather, etc.
We suggest that you check out the NYU Paris website, which has links to much valuable information about traveling to and getting around in Paris.
How long does my passport need to be valid to travel?
Participants must have a passport that is valid for 6 months after your date of re-entry to the U.S. If you do not have a passport or need to renew your passport, please visit the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs website at http://travel.state.gov/passport.
Do I need a visa for the study abroad in Paris program?
If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen, or a citizen of an European union country, you do not need a visa for the program. Citizens of all other countries should check with the French consulate to confirm their travel visa needs.
It is your responsibility to determine whether or not you need a visa, and to obtain the visa if required. Plan ahead to allow yourself sufficient time for this process.

Do I need additional health insurance coverage?
All students traveling abroad need health insurance coverage. Students should check with their health insurance provider to see what coverage they have for travel abroad. Most companies offer additional short-term international coverage, if needed.
Do I need any inoculations prior to travel to Paris?
All students should consult NYU Student Health Center or their private physician regarding the need to update any inoculations or other health-related travel precautions.
