Location: San Patrignano, Rimini, Italy, a renowned Italian therapeutic community, in Northern Italy.

Participants:

Social work and other mental health disciplines; *Second year master's students may register for this course in fulfillment of their degree requirements. They will be allowed to participate fully in Convocation May 2013, prior to completing the course by applying for a Dean's exception to receive the actual degree subsequent to completing the course. Approval for New York State CASAC credits will be sought.

Program Focus:

Substance use, misuse and/or dependence is a pervasive problem throughout the world, although the treatment approaches are culture-bound. Treatment approaches offered in other countries differ from those in the U.S. and within Europe, the Italian approach differs from that in other countries.
Learning objectives:
1.      To increase the empirical knowledge regarding problems related to substance use, misuse and dependence from a international, particularly European, perspective
2.      To understand differential effects of substance use problems and recovery in relation to culture, age, and gender
3.      To understand the variety of treatment approaches from an international perspective, such as harm reduction, therapeutic communities, restorative justice, quality of life, and other non-12 step treatment approaches
4.      To explore the role of strength-based mutual help in the treatment of drug addiction
5.      To understand the strength and limitations of professional, especially social work, interventions from an international perspective

Academics:

This 3 credit course (27 hours; 17 hrs. of formal lectures + 10 hours of informal learning opportunities) will expose students to substance use issues and treatment approached from an international perspective, with a specific focus on an Italian treatment model. While living in separate cottages, students will interact and learn from recovering drug addicts who reside in and run this therapeutic community built on a restorative justice model. Formal lectures by Prof. Lala Straussner and international guest speakers will focus on European models of harm reduction, the history of therapeutic communities, the use of the restorative justice approach, and the special issues related to drug-using men, women and their children, and adolescents, as well as international aspects of drug-related criminal justice, HIV/AIDS and related issues.
The course will include a mid-term assignment consisting of a daily log reflecting on one’s experience and learning while living in San Patrignano and a final paper which will be due upon return to New York. More information will be provided at a later date.

Tuition and registration fees: $3656 (estimated) for 3 graduate credits. ** Continuing Education non-credit participants pay 2/3 tuition of $2064.
Housing
Shared room and full board at San Patrignano will be an estimated $1200 for the 10 days stay.
Travel
Flight from NYC to Rome is approximately $950 roundtrip (flight prices are subject to change based on booking date). Train travel to and from Rome to Rimini will approximately $100/round trip. All travel (to and from Italy, within Italy) and personal expenses are the responsibility of the participant.
A non-refundable deposit of $150 toward the housing fee will be due upon acceptance into the program.
