Program Summary

Study Spanish in a four hour a day intensive at Centro Linguístico Conversa, a mountain-top school, where you will be placed in a class of no more than 4 students, based on your language level. Take a 3 credit course on "The Culture and Social Issues of Central America." Explore social policy issues as they affect vulnerable populations, particularly children and families. Live with a host family in a charming town outside San José, the capital of Costa Rica.

Academic Details

This course will introduce students to the European heritage and Indigenous cultures and the contemporary socio-political, ecologic and economic issues facing the developing countries of Central America through lectures by the faculty and guest speakers, discussions of readings and films, as well as site visits to a public pre-school for severely mal-nourished children, a private shelter for abused and neglected girls, and a non-profit child abuse prevention agency with a current emphasis on sexual trafficking and tourism.

The course instructor, Madeleine L. Dale, M.A., M.P.H., LCSW has directed social work services to Latino children and their families at Yale, Harvard, and University of California teaching hospitals. She has lived and worked throughout Central America, providing consultation and technical assistance to educational institutions, government agencies, or NGOs in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, and Panamá, Peru, and Brazil as well as on contract to UNICEF and USAID. She teaches social policy as an adjunct at the NYU Silver School of Social Work.
