05.06.2008 - The Intersection of Law and Social Work: Emerging Opportunities and Challenges
Speakers will present an overview of the legal system including the structure of the court system and legal and judicial reasoning, providing an important perspective for social workers who practice in this arena.
The discussion of social work practice in this field will highlight clinical practice issues, the range of roles and practice opportunities and the value conflicts and ethical dilemmas that emerge.
Using case illustrations from their own work, social work and legal staff of Community Court programs and other innovative initiatives will discuss how social workers and lawyers practice in these venues and will present strategies that enhance collaborative work.

05.28.2008 - Disability and Aging: New Perspectives and Emerging Challenges
This symposium is the last in a series of presentations on the topic of disability throughout the life span. The focus of this event is on the impact of the aging process on people with disabilities but is relevant to all aging persons.
Speakers will highlight issues related to how increasing disability due to aging alters life style and functioning, the challenge of maintaining an adequate support system to sustain independence as caregivers age and the impact on social and community agencies to alter current service delivery systems.
We will hear from experts in the field who will address
biological, psychosocial and spiritual issues. Two speakers will present
personal stories. In addition, there will be a discussion of legal, policy and
ethical issues.

06.04.2008 - Exploring the Role of Spirituality and Religion in Social Work Practice
The
mental health profession has traditionally focused on evaluating individuals
from a bio-psycho-social perspective. Less attention has been paid
to the influential role that spiritual and/or religious beliefs play in a
person’s development, and in the healing process in general. As a result,
social workers and other mental health professionals often do not feel
comfortable addressing the client’s spiritual and/or religious perspective
during times of transition and crisis.
This
conference will examine this topic through research, theory, and implications
for practice. There will be a focus on assessment tools and therapeutic
strategies as applied to issues such as end of life and bereavement, violence,
addiction, mental illness, life transitions including divorce,
parenting, and adoption, trauma, and other significant life experiences.
