Interdisciplinary Minors in Social Work

Social Work Minor and Individual Courses

Students in the College of Arts and Science may enroll in the minor in social work given jointly by the Silver School of Social Work and the College of Arts and Science. This minor offers the opportunity to study in our professional school of social work, one of the foremost in the nation. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of many of the complex social problems of our time, domestically and internationally, and what can be done to alleviate these problems.

The 16-point minor consists of four courses, or three courses and Field Experience (a one-day-per-week field learning experience offered every spring for 5 points). It is recommended that students in the social work minor program enroll in Introduction to Social Work (4 points) and Skills in Interpersonal Communications (4 points), and choose among our many electives that focus on "front-line" social issues, including:

  • Social Justice and Peacemaking (4 points);
  • Homelessness (4 points);
  • Services to Children and Families (4 points);
  • Global Perspectives in International Social Policy (4 points);
  • Social Work and Substance Abuse (4 points);
  • Social Work and Family Violence (4 points);
  • Society and Mental Health (4 points);
  • Service Learning Through Community Engagement (2 points).

Students enrolled in other schools in the University are invited to register for courses given in the Silver School of Social Work for which they have the appropriate educational background. Students with a social work minor may not enroll in Social Work Practice I and II, or in Field Instruction I and II. Students interested in the minor in social work or in undergraduate social work courses should consult with the Director of the undergraduate social work program, 1 Washington Square North, (212) 998-5944 .

Minor in Poverty Studies

Undergraduate students from all NYU schools may complete an interdisciplinary minor in poverty studies through the Silver School of Social Work (SSSW); the College of Arts and Science (CAS); Tisch School of the Arts (TSOA) ; and The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development (Steinhardt).* This minor presents the opportunity to study poverty through academic courses as well as through service learning. Students will develop a perspective on the complex problem of poverty and its consequences as it affects children, families, the elderly, homeless, victims of domestic violence, the disabled, and others both domestically and internationally. Through volunteer work performed in the SSSW service learning program, students will gain first-hand knowledge of the conditions faced by these populations and the impact of political and economic factors on the day-to-day realities of service provision.

Requirements

The 18-credit minor consists of four courses, to be selected in consultation with the program director and a (required) 2-credit service learning course. Specific course sequencing is not compulsory, but existing pre-requisite restrictions for electives will apply.

Students are required to take either Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare or Social Welfare Programs and Policies; Ending Poverty: Models for Social Change and Social Action; one of the listed SSSW electives and Service Learning (2 credits). Students will also take one of the listed courses at CAS, TSOA, Stern, or Steinhardt. Students may double count courses taken in pursuit of this minor to satisfy requirements for core curriculum, majors, and additional minors.
