Dr. Gladys González-Ramos is Associate Professor at the New York University School of Social Work and Adjunct Associate Professor of Neurology at the New York University School of Medicine. She received her Masters and Doctoral degrees in Social Work from NYU. She holds a certificate in psychoanalytic psychotherapy with adults from The Institute for Mental Health Education and a certificate in psychoanalytic psychotherapy with children and families from The Postgraduate Center for Mental Health.
Dr. González -Ramos teaches in both the Practice and Human Behavior sequences. Among the courses she has developed and teaches at NYU is an elective, Social Work Practice in Health and Mental Health, which examines the inter-relationship between mind and body and covers several neurological disorders throughout the life-span, including their impact on both the individual and family. Her areas of interest include mental health, delivery of care to Hispanic children and families, mothers’ cultural child-rearing values and, in the field of health, the role of social work, interdisciplinary team training and the delivery of care to persons with Parkinson disease and their caregivers.
Dr. González-Ramos has served as co-principal investigator on several federal government and private foundation grants for her work on cultural values of Hispanic mothers and in the field of Parkinson disease. In the past, she received an NYU Challenge grant for the development of the Study Social Work in Puerto Rico project, which she taught from 1994 to 2002. In addition, she received a grant from the Chatlos Foundation to develop and implement, with Prof. Milagros Sanchez-Nester, Project Mi Tierra/My Country, a school-based program for Hispanic immigrant children in New York City public schools. In spring 2007, she and Alex Moroz, MD were awarded the NYU Challenge grant for Disability Curriculum for Health Professionals: Measuring the Impact on Attitudes, Knowledge and Skills.
Dr. González-Ramos is a consultant to the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) on national educational and outreach initiatives. Along with Ruth Hagestuen, RN, MA, she serves a co-director of Community Partners for Parkinson Care (CPP), a national community outreach program that seeks to form national and community-based partnerships to raise awareness and help medically underserved families throughout the U.S. who are living with Parkinson disease to access specialty medical care. This program and research has been continuously funded, for the past six years, by the Medtronic Foundation. Dr González-Ramos also serves as assistant director and faculty on Allied Team Training for Parkinson (ATTP), a national interdisciplinary program providing specialty training in Parkinson for physicians, nurses, and allied health workers, including social workers. In this capacity, she works to expand the role of social workers in the filed of neurology and help other professionals understand the scope of social work practice. This program and research has been funded, for the past six years, by the federal government (HRSA) as well as by corporate and private sources. Dr. González-Ramos is also overseeing program development for social work, educational and community-based programs at the recently opened New York University Parkinson Disease and Movement Disorder Center. This Center is supported by the Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation.
At NPF, she has been appointed to the Center Review Board which is responsible for reviewing requests for NPF Center of Excellence designation and grant proposals. She previously served on Boards for the Hispanic Mental Health Professionals Association and the American Orthopsychiatric Association where she chaired the Latino Study Group. Related to her work in Parkinson disease and with family caregivers, she has been asked to serve on task forces at The Hastings Center, The United Hospital Fund, National Parkinson Foundation and the Family Caregiver Alliance.
Dr. González-Ramos is a frequent speaker on the topics of community outreach to medically underserved communities and about family caregivers and Parkinson disease.
