Dr. Landsberg is a Professor and Director of the Institute Against Violence. The Institute, which was established eight years ago, conducts research, and provides training and technical assistance in the areas of forensic mental health, youth violence prevention, and family violence prevention and intervention.
Through the Institute, Dr. Landsberg has served as the Principal Investigator on a number of federal, state, and local government and foundation funded projects. These include a SAMSHA-funded evaluation of diversion of the mentally ill from the criminal justice system; a Department of Justice project on Victims of Mentally Ill Offenders; a CDC-funded youth violence prevention project - East New York United for Safety; and a New York Community Trust-funded project on Planning and Advocacy for Forensic Mental Health Services in New York City. In the last four years, the Initiative has worked with the Partnership for After School Education called Partners in Healing. In this project social work interns have been placed in after school programs to provide counseling and emotional support to youth participants. The evaluation conducted by the Initiative demonstrated significant positive effects on the youth and the agencies. The Initiative developed a number a number of certificate training programs, e.g. on Forensic Mental Health, Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Domestic Violence, and Conflict Resolution which are now run by the School’s Division of Life Long Learning. The Institute also sponsors regional, national and international conferences.
Dr. Landsberg is the author of numerous publications in the area of forensic mental health and in the other areas of violence. He was the editor of a newsletter "The Community Mental Health Report" and is the co-editor of two books – “Forensic Mental Health Work - Working With Mentally Ill Offenders” (Civic Research Institute, November 2001) and “Issues and Directions in Serving Mentally Ill Offenders in the Community” (Springer, January 2002). Dr. Landsberg also serves as an expert on violence issues and presents on radio and TV.
Dr. Landsberg is also extensively involved in studying community-based services to seniors. Through a previous grant from the United Jewish Appeal and from a current grant from the Samuels Foundation, he has explored Supportive Service Programs to Natural Occurring Retirement Communities. A regional conference and presentations were held. An article describing the NORC research appears in a special edition of the Journal of Gerontological Social Work (Vol. 49, 2007).
Dr. Landsberg teaches Social Policy courses and an elective on Violence in American Society.
Prior to coming to NYU Dr. Landsberg had a career of more than 20 years in mental health. His positions included: Director of Research at Maimonides Medical Center, CMHC, (1967-1978); Associate Director of St. Claire's CMHC (1978-1979); Director of Ulster County Mental Health Services (1979-1987); and Associate Commissioner of the New York City Department of Mental Health (1987-1991).
His degrees include an MSW (NYU 1967), an MPA (NYU 1979), and a DSW (CUNY 1979).
