Dr. Gary Holden is a Professor at the New York University Silver School of Social Work. He is a former faculty member in the Mount Sinai School of Medicine where he was a co-investigator on the National Inner City Asthma Study and the Minorities Risk Factors and Stroke Study. Dr. Holden was a member of the Health Summit Working Group that developed the IEEE-USA endorsed criteria for the assessment of the quality of health information on the Internet. Since coming to NYU he completed the third randomized controlled clinical trial of Starbright World, the award winning computer network for hospitalized children and a meta-analysis of the set of RCCTs that examined Starbright World.
Dr. Holden is the former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Social Work Education and a current member of the Editorial Board of Social Work in Health Care. He developed and is the current editor of Information for Practice, the international news and new scholarship aggregation site for social work professionals. Building on years of educational outcome measure development research, he is currently working on the Evaluation Self-Efficacy scale that he and his colleagues created while he was a Senior Scholar at the Council on Social Work Education. Dr. Holden has also been closely involved in the Society for Social Work Research’s Presidential Task Force on Publication and in the development of the new Journal of the Society for Social Work and Research.
Dr. Holden has published on a range of topics including behavioral health and telehealth, bibliometrics, social work education, the Social Cognitive Theory construct self-efficacy, and the Internet. He received his masters in social work in 1987 and doctorate in social welfare in 1990 (with distinction for the dissertation) from Columbia University.
