Dr. Wolkstein began her professional career as a Rehabilitation Counselor for the NJ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. She then became the Director of the Vocational Rehabilitation Department at Beth Israel Medical Center, with responsibility for establishing, building, and managing the vocational rehabilitation services for the Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program, the in- and out- patient comprehensive alcohol treatment program, and the in-patient detoxification services. Before joining the NYU School of Social Work, Dr. Wolkstein was an Adjunct Assistant Professor, Research Scientist, Principal Investigator, and Program Director within the NYU School of Education. She was responsible for obtaining and managing grants from agencies including NIDDRR Research and Training Center in Drugs and Disabilities (National Training Director), New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Service, (Director, Work Study Program in Vocational Rehabilitation and Substance Abuse and Research Director), and the Rehabilitation Services Administration (Project Director).
As the Director of the Division of Lifelong Learning and Professional Development at the School of Social Work, Dr. Wolkstein has developed and manages a full array of professional learning programs including six Post Master’s Certificate Programs, monthly seminars, conferences, special workshops, and more recently an international Post Master’s Study-Travel. In collaboration with Dr. Susan Gerbino, she has been awarded training grants from a number of social work agencies and organizations, including UJA/Federation of New York to conduct research and training in Palliative and End of Life Care.
