Program Director: Professor Jerome Wakefield, University Professor, Professor of Social Work, Professor
of the Conceptual Foundations of Psychiatry at NYU
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Silver School of Social Work, Professor Jerome Wakefield, of
NYU, is offering a unique 2-course, 6-credit sequence on depression this summer session. The course
will focus on the international perspectives on depression, taking place partly in New York and partly
in Paris. Each segment is also available as a stand-alone 3-credit course. Other flexible combination
arrangements may be possible with Professor Wakefield’s approval. This course is open to Master's and
Doctoral students and to CE participants, including qualified alumni, mental health professionals, and
others by permission. Enrollment is strictly limited and subject to approval by the instructor. The two-course
sequence is described below.
Course One
Depression: Conceptual and Clinical Perspectives
3 credits, to be graded pass/fail; CE credit available
Monday, May 10th –
Thursday, May 13th
Washington Square Campus
The May section of the course will examine recent controversies about the definition,
diagnosis, prevalence, and treatment of depression as well as accounts of the cultural
roots and meaning of depression. Participants will explore international—especially
French and English—perspectives on these issues. The format of the course will be a
combined lecture/seminar and can be taken either as a stand alone course or combined
with International Perspectives on Depression, Mental Disorder, and Psychiatric
Epidemiology to be given in Paris in June.
Course Two
International Perspectives on Depression, Mental Disorder, and Psychiatric Epidemiology
3 credits, to be graded pass/fail; CE credit available
Monday, June 14th –
Monday June 21st
Paris, France
This program is a
study abroad opportunity.
Participants in the June section of this course will have the opportunity to attend and reflect with Professor Wakefield on a series of conferences on depression and philosophy of psychiatry held in Paris. The conferences are part of ongoing research programs by French sociologists, philosophers, and others into the nature, social roots, and implications of contemporary developments in mental health.
The cost for both programs is $2,000 for Continuing Education students ($1,000 for each course). Airfare and accommodations in Paris are not included, but accommodations can be arranged through NYU in Paris.
