MSW Transfer & International Students

We accept transfer students who have completed their first year at an accredited graduate social work program. We also accept students who have taken up to 12 credits (4 courses) at an accredited graduate social work program within the last five years. Students must have earned a grade of B or better and the content of the course must be equivalent to ours. Courses will not transfer if they were credited toward a previous degree or if they were taken more than five years ago. *The courses must have been taken no earlier than five years prior to the academic year of application to the school.

  1. All foreign academic records must be submitted with official translation. Applicants with such credentials should file their applications well in advance of the term for which they are applying.a
  2. Every applicant whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign language (TOEFL). If you are not taking the Internet-based TOEFL, please make sure to also take the TSE (Test of Spoken English) and the TWE (Test of Written English) and submit scores from all tests. TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date. Scores more than two years old can’t be reported. Information about this examination may be obtained by writing to TOEFL Services, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151, U.S.A., or by e-mailing toefl@ets.org or by visiting their website at www.toefl.org. Each student must request that his or her examination score be sent to NYU School of Social Work (test code 2506).

Applicants residing in the New York City area may take their English proficiency test at the University's American Language Institute, located at 48 Cooper Square, Room 200, New York, NY 10003-7154, U.S.A. An appointment to take the test may be made by telephoning (212) 998-7040.
