Dr. Shaleen Vira is an Orthopaedic Surgery Resident at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. His social entrepreneurship interest is in developing novel delivery systems to improve surgical care access in low resource settings, both domestically and abroad. He has over 20 publications in the areas of spine surgery, joint replacement, molecular biophysics, biomedical engineering, and surgical care delivery in low resource settings. He has been awarded research fellowships at the National Institutes of Health, Hospital for Special Surgery, and the Food and Drug Administration.

Dr. Vira graduated from New York University’s prestigious 8-year combined BA/MD prograum where he received BA Phi Beta Kappa in Biology and Economics with honors from the NYU College of Arts and Sciences and MD from the NYU School of Medicine. During medical school, he served as the CFO to the NYC Free Clinic that provides free primary care services to the uninsured. He received the Musculoskeletal Research Award, Department of Medicine Clerkship Award, and was a Rhodes Scholar Finalist. In college, he served as president of the Economics Honors Society and editor-in-chief of the Economic Review, an annual undergraduate research journal. He grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland and graduated valedictorian from Rockville High School where he was an Intel Science Talent Search Semifinalist, National Merit Scholar, and National AP Scholar.
