November 15th is the Great American Smokeout, an annual event designed to encourage smokers to quit and to provide them with support as they start the process. Many smokers know that quitting can be very difficult. But the good news is that it's not impossible - after all, more than 3 million Americans quit every year! Many quitters had to try more than once - and more than one method - before they succeeded. But if they could do it, so can you!

If you smoke, there are plenty of reasons you can give yourself not to quit. Even if you want to quit, these reasons can be powerful barriers to the process. If you've ever told yourself one of these statements, think about the following.

"I'd quit, but…

  • …I'm under a lot of stress and smoking relaxes me."
Since your body is dependent on the nicotine in tobacco, the intake of that substance calms you. But nicotine is actually a stimulant, so it may be the simple act of deep breathing that makes you relax.
  • …I've tried before and it didn't work."
Most people need several attempts before they finally quit for good. Remember, quitting is a process. Smoking one or a few cigarettes once you've officially "quit" doesn't mean you've failed - you can deal with the slips and still prevent relapse.
  • …I'll gain weight."
The truth is that many, but not all, tobacco users gain weight when they quit. Actually, 23% lose weight. On average, ex-smokers only gain five pounds. Incorporating exercise in to your new lifestyle can help you maintain your desired weight.
  • …I don't have the willpower. It's too hard to quit."
Quitting is hard, but not impossible. Many people have to try more than once, and different methods, before they succeed. Having an actual quit plan and support system in place can contribute greatly to your success!

If you want help, it's just an appointment away. Quit & Win helps you address concerns such as dealing with cravings, urges, withdrawal symptoms, weight gain, and handling stress without cigarettes. The Student Health Center also offers free nicotine patches to students and staff who qualify. For more information, stop by or call the Health Promotion Office located in the SHC.
