Event Details

The cooking competition is one piece of a larger Nutrition Initiative on campus. We hope that through the Master Chef cooking events, Tasty Tours of dining halls, Tasty Tuesdays demos, Peer Education workshops, and Nutrition Services, you receive all of the healthful eating and cooking information for which you are looking!

Teams: A team can have 1, 2, or 3 members. All team members must be enrolled NYU students.

Prizes: The two teams that make it to the finals will each receive prizes. The 2nd place prize will be a wooden spoon set and cookbook for each team member. The grand prize will be a food processor, kitchen tool set, and two cookbooks (provided by the NYU Bookstore) for each team member.

Location: The competition will take place in the Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health Department's kitchen classroom, located on the 10th floor of the Education Building at 35 W. 4th St. Due to space restraints, only chefs and judges are allowed in the kitchen.

Dates/Times: Will be announced to selected teams in January.

Level Choice: Each team must apply for one of two levels. If possible, eight teams will be selected to compete in each level. The final will be a face-off between the winner of the novice division and of the advanced division.

  1. Novice - Has limited cooking experience.
  2. Advanced - Has previously competed in a cooking competition, worked in a professional kitchen, taken extensive cooking classes, and/or feels up for a challenge!

Recipes: Each team will submit a breakfast recipe, which will be how the coordinators select the 16 teams to compete, and will be the first meal teams cook in the preliminary round. The quarter-final meal is a lunch, the semi-final meal is a dinner, and the final meal is a 3-course dinner. There will be three judges for the first three rounds and five judges for the final competition. Teams will be making one portion from which the judges will sample. Please keep this in mind when submitting recipe quantities. Recipes will always be submitted in advance. Teams can only use the ingredients listed in the Application Packet. All ingredients will be provided. No outside food or materials will be allowed. Keep in mind you will have only 20 minutes to prep and 60 minutes to cook.

Judging: Criteria for judging during the competition include the following:

  • Portion Size/Nutritional Balance
  • Presentation/General Impression
  • Taste/Harmony of Ingredients/Sustainable Choices
  • Sanitation/Kitchen Skills
  • Timing

There will be three randomly selected judges consisting of chefs, nutritionists, and staff/students. If you are solely interested in judging the competition, send an email to cml300@nyu.edu with the following information: Name, primary phone number, primary email address, availability (Mon-Fri, 9am - 5pm), and category (NYU chef, NYU nutrition professional, NYU student including major, NYU staff member). Judges are not compensated.

Sustainability: Due to NYU's commitment to sustainabilty on campus, Master Chef NYU is challenging this year's participants to use seasonal produce. Your team will be judged on the use of sustainable ingredients. On the application's ingredient list, you will find some popular produce missing because it is out of season, as well as indicators of more and less sustainable food items to include in your recipes. Check out this Seasonal Produce Chart for New York State and the competition ingredient list for more information. Also, below is a sample of what a sustainable meal could be:

Sample Sustainable Menu for Winter Months
This menu incorporates healthy, seasonal, and delicious ingredients.

  • Starter
Leek and potato soup with pan fried garlic crisps
    Pennsylvania, New Jersey
  • Main course
Grilled Atlantic salmon with roasted bronze fennel and groats with Hudson Valley cider vinegar and pan-seared cranberries
Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey
  • Dessert
McIntosh apple crisp with New England maple syrup and organic cinnamon yogurt
    Vermont, New York, New Jersey

Free Agents: If you do not have a team and do not want to compete on your own, you can submit an application with your registration information, an idea for a recipe, and a survey. Your team name should be "Free Agent." Once teams have been selected, each captain will have the opportunity to fill his/her team with a free agent. You will not be able to pick the team you join. Submitting a "Free Agent" application does not mean you will be selected for the competition.

NYU-TV: Each year's competition is documented by still photos and NYU-TV cameras. Master Chef: NYU, the TV show, debuted in April 2007. It showcases all 16-teams and their delicious creations. Focusing on the final, you can see the competition heat up between the final teams. Check the NYU-TV website for when it will be aired next or purchase a copy of your own.
