Health Leadership Program Description

Student Health Center (SHC) Health Leaders are a select group of students who demonstrate strong leadership skills and act as ambassadors for health and the Student Health Center. As such, they receive training on the services within the Student Health Center, as well as on a variety of health topics most relevant to college students. In addition, Health Leaders are trained in evidence-based helping techniques such that they can lead Bystander Intervention (BI) workshops for their fellow students.

Health Leaders are full-time NYU students who serve as SHC resource and referral agents, popular health opinion leaders and Bystander Intervention trainers. Applicants must maintain good academic standing (2.5 GPA) and abide by all expectations set forth by the NYU student code of conduct to be considered for the position.

Bystander Intervention Focus

Bystander Intervention is a form of prosocial behavior - caring about the welfare and rights of others, feeling concern and empathy for them and acting in ways that benefit or help others. It has the potential to reduce harmful incidents on campus by helping students to recognize situations where help is needed and to develop the skills necessary to do so successfully. It fosters norms for mutual helping and responsibility, as well as a foundation for building a community of "helpers" who can assist others in a variety of situations.

SHC Health Leadership Content Areas

Successful applicants are outgoing, motivated, and committed student leaders who want to make a difference on campus. They value health and wellness, make informed lifestyle choices and want to learn more about the following topics:

  1. Alcohol
  2. Health Literacy
  3. Mental Health/Depression
  4. Nutrition
  5. Interpersonal Relationships
  6. Physical Activity
  7. Safe and Health Campus Community
  8. Sexual Healthy/Safer Sex Practices
  9. Sleep
  10. Stress

Trained as generalists in these areas, Health Leaders provide accurate, non-judgmental information to their peers, direct them to resources and services, and participate in health communication efforts on campus. Each Health Leader is supervised by a professional Health Educator and has access to providers throughout the Student Health Center as topic advisors.
