Allergy
The SHC allergist is available by appointment. A consultation is required, even though you may already know what triggers your allergic reactions. SHC's Allergy Department provides full services for evaluation, information, education, testing and treatment of allergies. The staff includes a board-certified allergist and registered nurses.
Allergy Services are available to all NYU students. Students under allergy or asthma therapy at home can continue their treatments while at NYU. Services are available to diagnose and treat allergies.
If you're not sure what you are allergic to, complete allergy testing is available. Most commonly, skin tests are performed. Occasionally, blood samples are drawn. The allergist will review the test results with you to discuss treatment options.
Immunology
SHC's Immunology services are available for the administration of the following vaccines and more:
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Immunological titers
- Influenza
- Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR)
- Meningitis
- Tetanus
- Varicella
New York State requires that all students have the necessary inoculations to ensure your well-being and the vitality of the NYU community. The Immunology Department at NYU Health Center offers immunizations for a fee.
Travel Medicine
Travel Medicines' staff of a physician and registered nurses is prepared to provide you with the latest health information and immunization services for your trip. The earlier you prepare for your trip abroad, the better. Please contact Travel Medicine as soon as you know that you are traveling to determine your travel health requirements. We advise you to schedule appointments 4-6 weeks in advance of your trip if possible. If you're planning a long trip, i.e. Study Abroad, 8-12 weeks in advance is advisable. Also, bring records of prior immunizations with you to your appointment if possible.
During your Travel Consultation, you will receive comprehensive information regarding recommended inoculations and how to stay healthy while you're traveling. You will also receive a "yellow book" that lists your new inoculations for your records.
Your consultation session will also cover:
- Travel Tips
- Diseases
- Malaria
- Yellow Fever
- Safe Food and Water
- Cruise Ships and Air Travel
- Illness and Injury Abroad

Also, depending upon your destination, you may also need malaria and traveler's diarrhea (may include antibiotics) prescriptions. Please check with your insurance carrier regarding coverage.
