General FAQs about Student Health Insurance
If I do not have the NYU Student Health Insurance, can I still use the Student Health Center? All matriculated students pay a mandatory health service fee as part of the registration process. This fee, that cannot be waived, provides access to many services at the NYU Student Health Center at no cost or reduced cost, regardless of whether or not they are enrolled in the NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plans. |
I see a doctor outside of the Student Health Center? How can I get a referral? If you are seeking services in Manhattan: Referrals are not required for the following services:
If you are seeking services outside Manhattan: If that is not possible, seek care from providers who participate in the Consolidated Health Plans (CHP) network to ensure maximum benefits and minimal out-of-pocket expenses. To find a Consolidate Health Plan provider, go to www.consolidatedhealthplan.com. Students may, however, use any provider outside the borough of Manhattan without an off-site referral from SHC. Any copays or coinsurance fees incurred will be the responsibility of the student. |
Why am I automatically enrolled in a student health insurance plan if I did not ask to be enrolled? The high cost of healthcare in the United States presents a potentially serious financial risk to students. The absence of adequate insurance coverage can result in temporary or permanent interruption of your education. New York University values the health of its students and requires that all students in degree-granting programs maintain adequate health insurance. Therefore, when you register for classes, depending on your school and credit load, you are automatically enrolled in the University sponsored plan determined by your school. If you maintain alternate health insurance that meets the University's criteria, you may waive the NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plans by the appropriate semester deadline. For more information, please visit the Student Health Insurance page. |
When is the deadline for completing a health insurance waiver if I have my own health insurance? Please see the complete list of Student Health Insurance deadlines. |

If you are covered under the Basic, Comprehensive, or GSHIP Plans and lose your eligibility to re-enroll due to graduation, transfer to another university, or withdrawal from NYU, you may be eligible to continue your coverage for an additional 1-month, 3-month or 6-month period for an additional cost.
