Providers and Referrals

Students Seeking Services IN Manhattan

Except for situations listed below, students covered under the Basic, Comprehensive or GSHIP Plans must first seek treatment at SHC, 726 Broadway. If evaluation by an SHC provider determines that you need services unavailable at SHC, you will be given a written, off-site referral.

Referrals are not required for:

  • Medical Emergency Treatment in a Hospital*
  • Gynecological Care
  • Maternity Care
  • Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services
  • Students that graduated from NYU

Services received in Manhattan without an appropriate referral are not covered by the NYU plans.

Students are responsible for any copay or coinsurance fees incurred, even if they have an appropriate referral.

Students Seeking Services OUTSIDE Manhattan

We encourage students covered by the NYU plans to first seek services by an SHC provider, at 726 Broadway, who will be able to supervise and coordinate care at no-or-reduced cost for medically necessary treatment at SHC.

If that is not possible, seek care from providers who participate in the MagnaCare or MultiPlan networks to ensure maximum benefits and minimal out-of-pocket expenses. To find a MagnaCare or MultiPlan Network Provider go to www.CHPStudent.com/nyu and link to Provider Search.

Students may, however, use any provider outside the borough of Manhattan without an off-site referral from SHC. Any copays or coinsurance fees incurred will be the responsibility of the student.

During Winter Break

If you are enrolled in the NYU-sponsored Basic, Comprehensive or GSHIP Plans, and require non-emergency medical care during Winter Break when SHC is closed for at least 24 hours, you may be treated by a healthcare provider without a referral from SHC. Once the Student Health Center reopens, you are required to seek services at SHC.

Please note: Seeking services from a preferred provider in the MagnaCare or MultiPlan network will reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.

* Medical emergency refers to an unexpected, sudden onset of a serious illness or injury that is life or limb threatening and may permanently affect quality of life.
