How to Access Medical Care

It is important to take responsibility for your health and wellness while at NYU. The friendly and knowledgeable staff at the Student Health Center is here to help you with your healthcare needs during your time at NYU. If you do not need acute care, we ask that you make an appointment by calling 212-443-1000 or online through the NYU Life tab of NYU Home.

How do I make an appointment?

What is an urgent need?

The following are some examples of symptoms requiring urgent care. Students should come in or call for a nursing assessment if they have:

  • persistent fever or chills
  • pain that does not go away
  • shortness of breath
  • chest pain
  • musculoskeletal injuries
  • lacerations or wounds
  • abdominal pain

If you have any questions about whether or not your need is urgent, call a nurse at 212-443-1120.

What is a nursing assessment?

If you experience illness or injury, a triage nurse at SHC will:

  • assess your symptoms;
  • discuss your concerns;
  • assist you in obtaining the most appropriate care for you — perhaps schedule a same day appointment or recommend a future appointment;
  • advise you of options to address your need.

Counseling and Wellness Services

Call 212-998-4780 to schedule an appointment for an individual counseling session or for a group session. You will be scheduled for a 20 minute phone triage appointment to help you select the proper counselor.

Walk-in counseling is available Monday-Saturday. If you have an urgent mental health need, the Wellness Exchange Hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 212-443-9999.

How to prepare for your visit:

  • Remember to bring your NYU I.D. and your health insurance card to every visit.
  • Arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to fill out any forms and to maximize the amount of time you have with your healthcare provider. If you need to cancel an appointment, please let us know at least 24 hours in advance.
  • Make a list of all symptoms and concerns, allergies and medications, prior to your visit so that you don't forget anything that may be important to you and your provider.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions. It is important to us that all your concerns, no matter how small they seem to you, be addressed—be your own advocate.
