Fast Facts

Eligibility

Students registered for one or more credits in degree-granting programs, maintaining matriculation, or having F-1 or J-1 visa status are eligible to enroll in an NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan.

Spouses, domestic partners or children of students enrolled in the Basic Plan, Comprehensive Plan or GSHIP are eligible for enrollment in an NYU-sponsored plan.

Students are not eligible for coverage under the NYU-sponsored plans if:

  • they are in non-degree granting programs and are not F-1 or J-1 visa status;
  • they attend the Sackler Institute, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, or NYU School of Medicine

Health Plan Options

The NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance Program offers the following options:

  • Basic Plan provides worldwide coverage for medically necessary healthcare services including hospitalization, laboratory tests, prescriptions, radiology services, physician visits, mental health visits and medical evacuation and repatriation in additions to the services at SHC for all matriculated students at no-or-reduced cost. Students seeking service in Manhattan must first seek treatment at SHC.
  • Comprehensive Plan covers the same medical and mental health services as the Basic Plan, but provides a higher level of coverage as detailed below.
  • GSHIP provides the same benefits as the Comprehensive Plan for graduate assistants, research assistants, teaching assistants and specifically designated fully-funded graduate students for whom the University has agreed to pay the student health insurance fee. The GSHIP benefits are exactly the same as those of the Comprehensive Plan.

All students matriculated in degree-granting programs have access to the NYU Student Health Center (SHC), whether enrolled in an NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan or maintaining alternate health insurance coverage. As a matriculated student, many no-cost or reduced-cost services are available to you both inside and outside SHC including:

  • Primary care and women's health office visits, short-term counseling and commonly performed laboratory tests and radiological procedures at the SHC, located at 726 Broadway
  • limited health insurance coverage for treatment of accidents at hospital emergency rooms as well as 10 mental health outpatient visits per year
  • treatment of dental emergencies through the NYU Dental Faculty Practice
