Health Plan Benefits and Details

Plan to study abroad?
Very few health insurance plans provide worldwide coverage. With the NYU Basic, Comprehensive and GSHIP Plans, your healthcare needs are covered around the globe, including Worldwide Emergency Travel Assistance Services; Medical Evacuation; and Repatriation.

Overview

In order to meet your needs while a student at NYU, the University offers several levels of health insurance coverage through the NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance Program. These plans are designed to provide reasonably priced healthcare coverage, and work in conjunction with the services provided by the health service fee paid by all matriculated students as part of the registration process.

Basic, Comprehensive and GSHIP Plans

The Basic, Comprehensive, and GSHIP Plans provide worldwide coverage for medically necessary healthcare services. The Comprehensive and GSHIP Plan reduces the risk of high medical costs by offering higher maximum payment limits than the Basic Plan, and also lowers the copay for physician office visits outside SHC.

These plans include coverage for:

  • Specialty care office visits and medical procedures performed at the Student Health Center, but not covered by the health service fee
  • Medical office Visits outside SHC
  • Mental Health and Chemical Dependency treatment outside of Counseling Services at SHC
  • Radiology and Laboratory Testing not covered by the health service fee
  • Prescription Drugs (including oral contraceptives)
  • Access to MultiPlan's Local and National Network of Preferred Providers
  • Worldwide Benefits
  • Worldwide Emergency Travel Assistance Services (for students studying abroad, traveling home to foreign countries, or visiting friends across the United States or abroad)
  • Coverage for Dependents

Note: Referrals for treatment outside of SHC may be required.

The NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance Program, which utilizes a MultiPlan Provider Network, is underwritten by Nationwide Insurance Company and administered by Consolidated Health Plans†.

Insurance Plan Exclusions

The NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plans, like most other health insurance plans, exclude certain items from coverage. Many of these exclusions are typical for health insurance programs, and some are unique to this program.

Some important exclusions include:

  • Pre-existing conditions when a student has previously waived the NYU-sponsored plans and then chooses to enroll via petition after the normal enrollment period—unless continually insured
  • Expense incurred as a result of dental treatment except when resulting from injury to sound, natural teeth
  • Injury resulting from play or practice of interscholastic sports. The NYU insurance Department, 212-998-2755, maintains a separate plan for such sports-related injuries.
  • Experimental or investigative procedures

Please note that this is only a partial list of exclusions under the plan. Refer to the Student Health Insurance Handbook for additional exclusions. A complete list of exclusions are dictated by the Master Policy on file in the NYU Insurance Department at 7 East 12th Street. For more information, contact Consolidated Health Plan at 877-373-1170.

† Although the NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance plans are underwritten by Nationwide Insurance Company and utilize the MultiPlan Provider Network, the NYU Student Health Center is not a participating provider in the MultiPlan Provider Network.
