Mobile Devices (NYU IT): Making phone calls in poor coverage areas with Wi-Fi calling and NYU Wi-Fi

If you are experiencing weak cellular carrier coverage or reception problems, you may be able to place and receive phone calls, as well as send and receive text messages using your phone's Wi-Fi calling feature (if available). This feature can be used with virtually any wireless network; see below for instructions on using it with NYU Wi-Fi when you are on campus in New York.

Note: You must have a mobile device that supports Wi-Fi calling to use this feature on your mobile device. Also be sure to check with your carrier to see if any restrictions or fees apply. See below for more information.

Step 1. Configure your phone for NYU Wi-Fi

The NYU Wi-Fi service provides secure, wireless access to NYU-NET from most NYU locations. Before you can use Wi-Fi calling with NYU Wi-Fi, you must first follow instructions to configure your iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) or Android device.

Step 2. Confirm availability and make a Wi-Fi call

Once you have configured your device to connect to NYURoam and you are in an NYU Wi-Fi enabled location in New York, follow the instructions below to determine if your mobile device supports Wi-Fi calling and, if so, to set it up on your device.
