As Director for Design, Mark Gordon, is responsible for assisting NYU stakeholders and outside professionals in the development of project design for NYU. The principal areas under the management of the Director for Design are:

  1. Management of Design Excellence Program: Promotes the quality of design and construction at NYU. The University carefully selects architects who have demonstrated achievement in design quality, thorough documentation and effective management, and is proud to regularly provide opportunities for the profession's leading practitioners, as well as promising newer firms;
  2. Professional Outreach: Primary liaison between NYU and the architectural community for issues relating to design work. This effort includes the management of architect's qualifications, design communication, planning and quality control requirements, and assistance with project management and contractual issues;
  3. Design Guideline Development and Management: Developing guidelines for the design and construction of new construction and renovation projects. In response to the goals and priorities set by the Sustainability Task Force, SAPD has developed the NYU Sustainable Design Standards and Guidelines. These guidelines, developed in collaboration with various NYU stakeholders, provide NYU and its design partners with a summary of NYU's priorities, minimum standards, and suggested ways to exceed those standards to contribute to the greening of NYU;
  4. Design Review and Consultation: Providing the University with design review and assistance for major capital projects, including new construction, major renovation, and the public realm. The office serves the University in providing design guidance and leadership as necessary to accomplish the goals of the project, as well as insuring that the project conforms to NYU guidelines.

Mark is a licensed architect with 15 years of private sector experience in the profession. He has a BA from Colby College and a Masters in Architecture from Harvard University. He lives with his wife and son in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
