"THE DENIAL OF GLOBAL WARMING"

Polls show that nearly one-third of Americans still believe there is “no solid” evidence of global warming or that if it is occurring it can be attributed to natural variability. Even among those who accept the reality of warming, many think that scientists are still debating the point. Join scientist and historian Dr. Naomi Oreskes as she describes her investigation into the reasons for such widespread mistrust and misunderstanding of the scientific consensus. Oreskes will probe the history of organized campaigns designed to create public doubt and confusion about climate science.

Naomi Oreskes is a Professor of History and Science Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Her research focuses on the historical development of scientific knowledge, methods, and practices in the earth and environmental sciences, and on understanding scientific consensus and dissent.  Oreskes's most recent work deals with the science of climate change.  She is currently completing "Science on a Mission: American Oceanography in the Cold War and Beyond," to be published by the University of Chicago Press.

THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

RSVPS WELCOMED BUT NOT REQUIRED.

Join us on March 10th for the final lecture in this series, featuring Robert Gottlieb on "Reinventing Los Angeles: Nature and Community in the Global City."  For more information and to RSVP, visit: http://www.nyu.edu/rsvp/event.php?e_id=659
