About Shimon Peres
Shimon Peres is the ninth President of the State of Israel. Peres served twice as Prime Minister of Israel and once as Acting Prime Minister, and has been a member of 12 cabinets in a political career spanning over 60 years. Peres was elected to the Knesset in November 1959 and served until 2007, when he was elected President.
Born in Poland (now Belarus) in 1923, Peres moved with his family to Palestine in 1934. He held several diplomatic and military positions during and directly after the War for Independence in Israel. Peres won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize together with Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat for the peace talks in which he participated as Israeli Foreign Minister, producing the Oslo Accords.
In 1997, he founded The Peres Center for Peace. The Center's mission is to help build an infrastructure for peace and reconciliation by and for the people of the Middle East that promotes socio-economic development, while advancing cooperation and mutual understanding. These goals are pursued by developing joint, cooperative projects between Israeli and Arab partners in the fields of economy, culture, education, healthcare, agriculture and media.
Shimon Peres has written over a dozen books, including The Next Step, David's Sling, Entebbe Diary, The New Middle East, For the Future of Israel and Battling for Peace.
About the Taub Center for Israel Studies [http://hebrewjudaic.as.nyu.edu/page/taub]
The Taub Center for Israel Studies was established in 2003 with the support of the Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation, to advance the study of Modern Israel: its recent history, society and politics, together with the history of the Zionist movement and the Yishuv.
NYU's pre-eminent position as a center of instruction and scholarship in Jewish history and thought, Hebrew language and literature, and Middle East Studies provides a natural setting for the development of Israel Studies. The Center is a part of the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at NYU’s Faculty of Arts and Science, which offers a range of undergraduate and graduate courses on Israeli history and society.
