Bio and Resume (.pdf)
Amanda Collison is working towards her Masters of Science in Nursing and has an interest in improving health for women and children in the underdeveloped world. Her specific focus is on maternal mortality which plagues women in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Amanda's vision leverages her first bachelor's degree in Business and her experience in the corporate world to bring sustainable change within the international health care arena.
Amanda first became passionate about international health care after traveling to Swaziland and visiting a local hospital. During her visit she became aware of the critical need for improved access to medical supplies and equipment, improved community-based training for health care providers, and enhanced health education within the local school systems.
Amanda's passion for women and children developed through her involvement with Young Life, a global nonprofit mentoring program for high school and middle school students. As a volunteer leader in Virginia, Amanda spent time mentoring high school girls, many of whom struggled with identity issues, relationship problems and anxiety about their future. Amanda recently helped to develop and launch a new mentoring program, Young Lives, which seeks to provide mentoring and support for New York City teenage mothers.
Amanda earned a Bachelor's in Business Administration from the College of William and Mary in 2003 and spent five years working for JP Morgan Chase in New York City. She spent 18 months in a rotational, consulting analyst program, and then served as an Associate Consultant within the Private Bank. In that role, Amanda served as the junior project lead for a large-scale business transformation, contributed to several technology implementation initiatives, re-engineered multiple inefficient business processes and served as a mentor to junior team members.
In May 2009, Amanda completed her second Bachelor degree in Nursing at NYU's College of Nursing. In addition to her clinical nursing experiences through New York University, Amanda also has experience working at Mount Sinai Hospital in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit as well as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. This summer she is interning with Child and Family Health International where she provides direct nursing care to children and their families in impoverished areas of La Paz, Bolivia. In addition, she is conducting an assessment of the current state of health care services and delivery in Bolivia and advocating for change where needed.
