Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development
Master of Arts, May 2009
Lizzie Hetzer is an elementary special education teacher and curriculum writer in Brooklyn, NY. With her young students, Lizzie focuses on participatory learning that fosters self-determination and social justice. Her teaching philosophy centers on Paulo Freire's notion of teaching as an act of love. Within the classroom, this approach means going beyond discipline systems that are typically used with students of color who are disproportionally represented in the special education setting. Instead, Lizzie focuses on creating a community of learners that is challenged to reflect on and construct responsible and thoughtful decisions.
Lizzie continues to study critical pedagogy and advocates for the rights of students with special needs. Lizzie received her MA in Educational Theatre from NYU's Steinhardt School, her MS Ed. in Teaching Urban Children with Disabilities from Long Island University, and BS in Business Administration from Villanova University.
