Statistics on Sexual Violence Rape is called “the most underreported violent crime in America”. In college survey of American women, an astronomical percentage of 95.2% of college women did not report a completed rape and 95.8% of college women did not report an attempted rape. (The Sexual Victimization of College Women, December 2000) In sample size of 4,432 college women, 1.7% had experienced completed rape and 1.1% had experienced 1.1% rape. This is 27.7 rapes per 1,000 female students. This means that 1 out of 36 college women experience a completed rape or attempted rape in an academic year. (The Sexual Victimization of College Women, December 2000) 9 out of 10 victims in college women knew the offender that had attempted or completed the rape. (The Sexual Victimization of College Women, December 2000) Acquaintance rape is much more prevalent than stranger rape. In a study published by the Department of Justice, 82% of the victims were raped by someone they knew (acquaintance/friend, intimate, relative) and 18% were raped by a stranger. 22.8% of college rape victims had been victimized before. (The Sexual Victimization of College Women, December 2000) About 13.5% of rape, attempted rapes and sexual assaults involved male victims in 2003. This is compared to a 5.7% in 2000. (National Crime Victimization Survey, 2003) 95,136 forcible rapes were reported in the United States for the year of 2002. Remember, these are only the number of forcible rapes that were reported.
