Description: From student staff to professionals there are always problems that will need some sort of compromise. Simple issues may be rectified immediately while complex issue will usually take more time to be settled. With integrative negotiation tactics, this strategy attempts to find solutions so any parties that are involved can create value, by identifying more resources and finding unique ways to share and coordinate the use of existing resources. Thus, integrative negotiation tactics help find the best possible resolution in any situation and achieve each party's interest(s) at hand.

New York University has provided Resident Assistants with an innovative tool to help engage students in a reflective dialogue that helps navigate a connection between the curricular and co-curricular. B.A.S.E. (Bridging Academic and Social Experiences) conversations are facilitated at the beginning of every semester and focus on three specific areas: academics, community, and wellness. This presentation will examine the goals and learning outcomes of B.A.S.E. We will discuss the successes and stumbling blocks we have encountered and, we will share data measuring student and staff perceptions of this process and related student behaviors. So come and find ways to implement this approach on your campus.

This session will explore ways to put our new professionals to work and make them feel like a valued member of the team. We will look at the seasons of the supervision for new professionals and discuss ways that we can help them grow and prepare for a brighter future. This session will give participants a chance to share some of their successes and challenges as we grow and learn from one another.

Ph.D in Community Development: Enhancing Social Capital Through Service Learning

Description: In the Fall of 2001, UCLA students, faculty, and staff launched an innovative program where students purchased over 2000 books from elementary school book companies such as Scholastic Books, and then donated them to under funded elementary schools in Los Angeles. Today, the project has expanded to two other universities. This presentation will explore how we can help students build social capital while at the same time learn about access and equity in American education. This program has now expanded to the University of Wisconsin and New York University.
