Is the summer position the entire time?

Yes; in the Summer, the role of the RA is transformed by the nature of Summer Housing. As responsibilities change, so does the name. “Summer Assistants” (SAs) perform a very different role during the Summer months and must commit for the entire Summer term.

Do you automatically get to become a RA for the summer if you are hired for the fall?

No. We offer all newly hired RAs (as well as current RAs) the opportunity to apply for an SA position. Because we staff the halls with about half the number of RAs that we require during the academic year, not everyone who applies for an SA position is offered one.

If you are an RA over the summer are you required to take classes? What is the outside work policy over the summer?

No, we do not require SAs to take classes. We do allow SAs to hold outside employment over the Summer if it does not interfere with their responsibilities as an SA.

In order to be a SA, do you have to have been offered an RA position for the following Fall?

When a Residence Hall Director chooses a staff after the RALI, she or he is doing so to staff for the following academic year. Though it has happened, it is rare that an applicant who was not chosen as a Fall staff member, but who was in the alternate pool, is offered a "Summer only" position.
