How can I find out about each building and what they are like? Do we get to choose where we are placed?

Check out the section of this web site that describes the various halls and residential communities to learn more about them.  We offer candidates the opportunity to tell us what type of hall community to which they feel they have the most to offer, but placement is up to the discretion of RHDs.  After the RA Leadership Institute, each RHD wants to create an RA team that is diverse, dynamic and able to meet the needs of residents in that particular residence hall.  As such, you may desire to take on the role of an RA in a certain building or feel that your strengths and talents may be best utilized in a particular setting, but it is ultimately up to each RHD to assemble the team that she or he feels will best accomplish the goals she or he has set for the upcoming year.

If I am offered a position, but don’t want to accept for that particular building, can I get hired somewhere else?

No, you cannot.  If you are offered a position in a specific building and refuse that offer, your application is considered inactive and you will not be considered for positions in other buildings.

If you are in a building that requires the RA to have suitemates, do you have any say as to which people will be placed with you?

Yes and no.  If we place an RA in an apartment which includes multiple bedrooms, we will give that RA the opportunity to pull in NYU roommates of her or his choice (who are eligible for NYU housing) and administratively place the roommates there if they so choose.  Please note that this does not include apartment-style buildings in the FYRE area (Third North and University Hall); incoming first-year students will be assigned to these spaces.

If you are placed in one building and successfully complete the year, do you stay in that same building the following year?

Each Spring, as a part of our RA Rehire Process, we give returning RAs the opportunity to request a transfer to another building in our system.  This request is not automatically granted, but is considered knowing the strengths and limitations of the particular RA in light of the needs of the building community requested.  This is the only point during the academic year that we entertain such requests
