All NYU owned and leased residence halls meet and in most cases exceed the stringent City of New York fire codes. Each resident will receive residence hall specific information about fire safety and evacuation procedures upon check-in. It is extremely important that residents familiarize themselves and their guests with all applicable fire safety procedures in their assigned building. Residents and their guests who fail to comply fully with applicable fire safety procedures, or who otherwise violate rules and regulations related to fire safety, will be subject to disciplinary action. All NYU owned buildings are equipped with fire alarms that are tested weekly. Residents are expected to maintain adequate standards of cleanliness so as not to create fire hazards, and must not obstruct sidewalks, entrances, passages, fire escapes, elevators, lobbies, stairways, corridors or halls with personal property.
The following items are prohibited in the residence halls and are subject to confiscation and disposal:
- Flammable decorations
- Natural or artificial evergreens
- Non-University issued furniture
- Electric heaters, air conditioners, hot plate burners
- Halogen lighting equipment
- Candles, incense, outdoor grills, or any other type of open flame or open coil service
- Explosives, fireworks, firearms, or ammunition
Due to fire safety concerns all outside furniture is prohibited.
Students found in possession of prohibited items will be subject to disciplinary action. Additional information regarding campus fire safety can be found on-line at www.nyu.edu/student.affairs/fire.safety.
