Welcome to the Parents’ Section of the Residential Education website. Please note that the term “parent” is used to refer not only to natural parent, but guardian, and those acting in place of a parent or guardian.

Help Us Help Your Student, Help Your Student Help Themselves

In Residential Education we work towards helping your student become a successful NYU student and transition further into adulthood from their high school experiences. Part of this experience for a parent or guardian is to allow students to explore their environment, be successful in some areas, and to encounter challenges in others; it is all an important part of the learning process.

Our professional staff members are trained with specialized degrees in the areas of college life, transition, and education and have experience working in the college environment previously. Our staff also has a passion to work in the residence halls and help expose students to new ideas, further their existing knowledge and skills, and support them through the challenges of college life, academics, and discovering their own identity. Together we as parents and staff can work collaboratively to best benefit your student and help them reach their fullest potential!

Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

With our work does come some limitations that we would like to be up front about so that you are informed. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal regulation that does limit the amount of information that can be shared by our staff if your student is 18 years of age or older. This regulation is in place to help protect the privacy of your student’s information while at the university. There are instances where we are permitted to share information with you such as if your student’s health or safety is in danger. Decisions to share information about a student are typically made by more senior administration within the department.

As a consistent practice we do highly encourage students to establish and maintain communication with their parent(s) so that you remain informed. If you would like to read more about the University’s compliance with FERPA regulations you can read more by visiting: http://www.nyu.edu/apr/ferpa.htm.

Residential Education's Communication With Parents

While most of our communication will be with your student directly we understand that to maintain our successful partnership we must make an effort to keep parents informed as well. There are a few ways that we may reach out to you as a parent and they include but are not limited to:

  • If your student is involved in a serious medical/wellness emergency
  • If your student is found in violation of university policies, local, state, or federal laws regarding alcohol or controlled substances while under the age of 21
  • If your student is in danger of being removed from on-campus housing
