Residential College

The Residential Colleges at NYU are housed in two of our premiere residence halls; Goddard (first-year) and Broome Street (sophomore, juniors, seniors). The environment within each will have a strong focus on building community through social and academic programming that celebrates the passions and interests of both students and faculty living in the building. With unique programming, service, and student/faculty dialogues the Residential College is an amazing opportunity for NYU undergraduate students to build community in a dynamic living and learning environment.

Institutions across the country are recognizing the importance of creating and maintaining collaborative learning communities that cross traditional campus boundaries between the formal classroom and the residential setting. Research repeatedly supports that the degree to which a student persists and succeeds in a university setting is directly related to the establishment of a community and culture of learning across the campus.

The Department of Residential Education recognizes that a student's learning is an on-going process, not bounded by the confines of traditional class time and space, and realizes that the array of experiences outside of the traditional classroom are a haven for the application of classroom theory, experiential learning, and life skill development.

The Residential College goes beyond your traditional classroom experience. This is why you are coming to NYU—to build strong bonds within the widely diverse and talented academic community at the University. The Residential College provides you the opportunity to engage with the most amazing faculty members, both living in the building and affiliated with the Residential College’s incredible events and activities. Examples of these programmatic offerings include trips in and around the city, famous guest speakers or service projects that make a real difference.

New York City is a remarkable place to live and learn; it offers a rich experience unmatched in any other educational setting. The Residential College taps into all of the resources of the City and University while providing you with a tight-knit community, giving you benefits of both a large school and a small college. Are you excited about having out of class discussions with faculty members over coffee at a local cafe in the Village or checking out the latest off-Broadway play with your classmates? The Residential College is a strong network of students, faculty and staff who are committed to exploring all of the unique interests, passions and scholarship of its members. It is an ideal setting for you to both explore your intellectual inquires and build life-long friendships. It is a multi-facted residential environment and the perfect complement to your classroom experience at NYU.

Hall Council

Student advocacy and hall-wide programming will remain a critical piece of the Residential College experience. This council will help create community standards,voice student and faculty concerns, as well as provide large-scale programs for the residence hall.

The Residential College Peer Board

In most of our residence halls, a Community Development Educator (CDE) adjudicates the majority of community standard infractions & violations. We believe members of the Residential College should hold one another accountable. Therefore, a peer board will be trained to hear and make recommendations about many of these cases.

Priority Assignment

Ever felt as if you have only begun to make relationships in your hall and it’s already time to move? This community will only build upon itself year after year. Students accepted into the Residential College will be given a strong priority in returning to the Residential College for every year until graduation. For first-year students in Goddard, this means having a priority to move to the Residential College at Broome Street. Provided you are an active and responsible community member, you will be able to keep your same housing assignment throughout your upper-class residential experience.

The College Board

We believe the Residential College should decide upon its future members. To this end, you will have the opportunity to join The College Board--this group (made up of students, faculty and staff) will be responsible for the admission and selection process for the next generation of the Residential College. From creating the application to selecting your newest community members, you will have the opportunity to truly shape the future of the Residential College.

Hallmarks of the Residential College

Service

The Residential College is committed not only to having a strong community within the buildings, but also one that serves the greater City of New York through the service of students, faculty and staff. Each student will be required to do at least 30 hours of community service during the academic year. The Residential College will provide opportunities to complete service projects with fellow residents.

Residential College "Streams"

The Department of Residential Education has found great success by providing opportunities for students to connect with one another through their interests and passions in the Explorations program, where students are housed on a particular residence hall floor based on one interest. The Residential Colleges will each have their own themes, but students will not necessarily be placed on a particular floor based on this interest. Students may select more than one theme as an interest and have the ability to attend programs that span all of these streams. The streams will be developed through programs and activities that are led by the faculty, staff, and students in the Residential College.

Student Dialogues

The Residential College will offer weekly opportunities for students to lead discussions alongside faculty members on relative topics--either to their particular theme--or other areas of topical interest.

The Symposium

Under the guidance of our faculty members living in residence, students who wish to participate in the Symposium will create a research project pertaining to either work done in their academic disicipiine or a personal passion. These projects will be displayed for examination and celebration in a culminating event at the end of the fall or spring term.

Staff of the Residential College

A dynamic team comprised of Faculty Fellows in Residence, a Community Development Educator, and resident assistants will lead the Residential College in helping all members of the community to create a vision and community expectations for the Residential College. There will also be Faculty Affiliates (similar to Explorations) who will help to create programming around the specific themes.
