What exactly is mixed-sex housing?

Mixed-sex housing is an option for interested NYU students (with the exception of for incoming first-year students). Students will be provided with an apartment suite for four students (two females in one room and two males in the other). Each group desiring the mixed-sex housing option may submit one application.

Who is eligible to participate?

Students interested in mixed-sex housing are only eligible if they:

  • Have at least sophomore status and are 18 years of age or older.
  • Have a renewable housing contract.

You must successfully complete the housing reapplication process and pay all required housing deposits according to the timeline and specifications of Housing. (See www.nyu.edu/housing for application and instructions.)

Please be reminded that the terms of the housing license are for both fall and spring terms. This is a 9 month commitment.

If you fail to meet any of these requirements or deadlines:

  • You will not be guaranteed a space in housing for the next academic year.
  • You will only be eligible for future housing through the wait list process.
  • You will not be considered for mixed-sex housing.

What else do I need to know?

Mixed-sex housing for undergraduate students will be available in apartments across the NYU campus system. However, each apartment selected must have exactly two bedrooms and two bathrooms for four students which grants both sets of roommates equitable bedroom, common, and bathroom space.

Once you have been placed in a group of four (many students apply as a group of four, but it is not required), you will be given a date and time to select your quad. Your date and time will be based upon your group's collective housing lottery priority status.

Selection of students will be based on timeliness of application. As in any roommate situation, please give careful consideration to choosing with whom you will live.

Applicants must continue with all procedures associated with the Housing lottery process until notified of a mixed-sex housing assignment. If selected, mixed-sex applicants will not need to submit a lottery card.

Students participating in mixed-sex housing should be committed to maintaining a livable environment free of discrimination, harassment and/or abuse. Students should intend to live with their selected roommate for one full academic year. If any person in the room leaves mixed-sex housing mid-year, there is no guarantee that the room will remain mixed-sex.

By applying for mixed-sex housing, you are agreeing to participate in all surveys and discussions that will occur during the program.

Can I live in Mixed-Sex Housing if I am studying abroad in the spring semester?

Ideally, all four roommates will commit to live in the mixed-sex apartment for an entire academic year. However, if one or more students leave the apartment at any point during the year, the remaining students must identify a replacement within two weeks of the cancellation notification (given to NYU Housing prior to leaving abroad). If the remaining roommates are unable to identify a replacement roommate, we reserve the right to administratively reassign at least one roommate in order to transition the apartment to a single-sex apartment.

What are the chances of being accepted without four students on the application?

Whether you are one, two, or three students in a group, we do our absolute best to place all students who apply. While we cannot guarantee placement, we do our best to place all applicants. Often it depends on how many other students apply and in what configuration. If there are questions regarding the application/selection/placement process, please feel free to contact our office.
