| RE: | Restrictions on Balconies and Windows |
During the summer, the University undertook a project to restrict the opening of balconies and windows in student residence halls for health and safety reasons, including the suicides our campus experienced the year before last. There is research that indicates that restricting the means to taking one's life — such as restricting access to balconies or window ledges — reduces suicide rates. Experts we consulted encouraged us to take this action, and we have followed their advice.
The balconies and windows will not be sealed; they will be restricted, but they will be able to open PARTIALLY to allow for fresh air.
I recognize that in decisions such as this, there is a balance to be maintained, and we are mindful of the possibility that actions we take may seem to pathologize a student body which we know is overwhelmingly healthy. We believe this is a reasonable response entailing a modest inconvenience that may well prevent a devastating event for a family and the University community.
