History of F.Y.R.E.:

Prior to the 2001-02 academic year over 1500 first-year students were assigned to live with upper-class students as roommates or suitemates. Given the unique issues of transitioning to a complex, urban environment, the mingling of first-year students and upper-class students in mixed-class buildings was seen as a detriment to the creation of a cohesive residential community. The First Year Residential Experience is a programmatic and geographic means of providing first-year students necessary resources during a critical time in the college experience. Six halls were originally designated exclusively for first-year students, with a seventh hall added to accommodate the growing number of entering freshman. In the fall of 2005, the housing process accommodated all freshman students living with freshman students.

For the upcoming academic year the following buildings are designated as F.Y.R.E. buildings: Hayden, Goddard, Weinstein, Rubin, Brittany, Third Avenue North and University Hall.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the First Year Residential Experience (F.Y.R.E.) program is to provide supportive and inclusive first-year student communities that foster academic success, exposure to new ideas, leadership opportunities, responsible living, and personal growth.
