The HEART (Helping Everyone Achieve Respectable Treatment) Campaign has been created by the Department of Residential Education to raise student awareness around issues of discrimination and bias. The department’s statement on diversity reads:

The Department of Residential Education at New York University is committed to providing residential communities that celebrate and respect the distinctiveness of each individual person, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, sex, gender identity, gender expression, ability, or age. The Department of Residential Education will make every possible effort to recruit, select, and train a diversity of staff members, both professional and paraprofessional, who will conduct their practice by serving each student with dignity, respect, and care. With the goal of exposing students to new ideas, peoples, and issues, we will provide programs within the residence halls and within New York City that challenge students to learn and to dialog about the issues that arise in the multicultural and pluralistic world and university in which we live.

In order to promote a safe and accepting environment at NYU, one should understand that the University defines a bias-related incident as “harassment or intimidation of an individual based on, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, national origin, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, sex, gender identity, gender expression, ability, or age.”

By joining the many others who have pledged their HEART to this campaign, you are committing your energies to this ongoing effort to show that “NYU has HEART!” HEART members are:

  • Willing to stand up to hate in all forms.
  • Allies to those who have been affected by hate.
  • Proactive in the fight against hate.
  • Dedicated to showing the strength of communities at NYU.

The PLEDGE

I (insert name) pledge to join the fight against hate. I value the members of my community and expect others to respect our right to live as we choose. I will not forget the effects an act of hate may cause. I will show that acts of hate will not be tolerated. I will stand with my fellow community members to say “NYU has HEART!”
