No-Cost Extension

A researcher working with a petri dish.

Background

Prior to the award termination, the Principal Investigator (PI) may request a no-cost extension to allow additional time to complete work on the award. A no-cost extension extends the end date of the award without increasing funding. A no-cost extension cannot be requested to simply expend the remaining available balance.

Extending the award end date requires sponsor approval. However, some sponsors (e.g., National Institutes of Health - NIH, National Science Foundation -NSF, National Aeronautics and Space Administration- NASA, and Department of Education - DOE) have delegated authority to the University (exercised through OSP) to extend end dates for up to one year. In all other instances, an extension must be approved by the sponsor.

NYU Approach

No-cost extension requests must be initiated by the PI on a  Request for Prior Approval of Changes in Federal Grants (PAS) form. The request should include:

  • The reason for the request
  • The amount of time requested (not more than one year)
  • The estimated unobligated balance of funds as of the original end date of the award

No-cost extensions must be requested before the award has ended (at least 10 days prior to original termination date) through a University PAS form.
