Postdoctoral Researcher Mentoring Plan

Proposals requesting support for a postdoc must include, in no more than one page as a supplementary document, a description of the mentoring activities that will be provided for such individuals. Examples of mentoring activities include career counseling, training in preparation of grant proposals, publications and presentations, guidance on ways to improve teaching and mentoring skills, how to collaborate effectively with other researchers, and training in responsible professional practices. Proposals that do not include the requisite mentoring plan will not be accepted for submission in FastLane.

Proposal plans should include information about NYU programs established in support of the University’s postdoc community. To supplement the important personal mentoring by the training supervisor in research skill development and knowledge of [discipline], NYU has an Office of Postdoctoral Affairs to provide career development in other areas, such as professionalism, communication, leadership and management. Postdoctoral Fellows who are funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health are also required to participate in Responsible Conduct of Research training in topics including: research misconduct, conflict of interest, collaboration in science, publication practices and responsible authorship, ownership, acquisition, storage and sharing of research data and mentor/trainee responsibilities. In addition, Postdoctoral Fellows are eligible for NYU sponsored membership in the New York Academy of Sciences and the Science Alliance, a consortium of universities and research institutions committed to advancing the next generation in science and technology.
