A: No. These apartments are designed for stays of moderate length: starting at one month and no longer than the semester. New York housing law does not allow the program to accommodate visits of less than one month.

A: No. These apartments are designated for international visitors only.

A: Yes, but be advised that the apartment must be reserved and paid for the entire calendar month in compliance with NYC housing laws. For example, a department hosting a guest staying from Feb. 2 – Feb 20, would still be required to pay the entire month’s rent.

A: No. This is in compliance with NYC housing laws.

A: Yes. Although we will, in the rare cases where scheduling enables this, make an exception. In cases where this presents a budgetary issue, it is best to work with the visitor to adjust the stay to fit within calendar month/s or look into alternative accommodation.

A: These are fully furnished studios and one-bedrooms that are occupant-ready. There are linens, towels, pots, pans, cable and internet.

A: No. Because the apartments are generally filled to capacity, this is not possible.

A: Yes. While the rental fees for these below market apartments include electricity, gas, internet, and cable, there is a $125 charge to have the apartment cleaned upon departure. In the case of long-term stays, the GRI office reserves the right to require additional cleaning at the tenant or department’s own expense at any time during the semester in the interest of keeping the apartment in good condition.

A: Generally, the inviting NYU faculty member should complete the application. An NYU administrator can also complete this form on behalf of the faculty member.

A: No. We provide the apartment only. Matters of visa and other day to day administration are the responsibility of the hosting department.

A: Our office only accepts rent in the form of a JEMS departmental transfer. An NYU chartfield is required in order to complete payment. In cases where the guest will pay for the apartment, a departmental transfer can be made to GRI prior to arrival. The hosting department can then make arrangements to deposit the visitor’s payment into their account.

A: No. We can only accept a departmental transfer via JEMS.

A: The apartment should be paid for in full prior to the guest’s arrival. In the case of semester-long stays where this presents a budgetary issue, arrangements can be made to pay for the apartment in two installments.

A: Yes. We do this very occasionally and for no longer than one month. If you wish to have a guest considered for a sponsored stay, please indicate this on the application. Please note that funds to support visitor stays are limited.

A: Yes. We do occasionally pay for visitors’ flights (not for ground transportation).If you wish for your visitor to be considered for sponsored travel please indicate this on the application.

A: No. We provide only the apartment itself. Any further support must be provided by the hosting department or faculty member.

A: No. Due to the turnover in these apartments, we cannot have visitors receive mail there as we cannot expect them to be responsible for the mail of past tenants. The GRI office has no mailbox keys for any of the apartments.

A: Visitors are provided with the phone number for FCM (212-998-1001) for maintenance issues that can be used 24 hours a day. If there are problems with furnishings, cable or internet, the inviting NYU faculty member or administrator should contact the GRI office. In general, the inviting faculty member or department administrator should be the contact person who communicates with GRI, as opposed to the visitor.

A: No. Our office provides an apartment only, the hosting department must handle any other details related to the stay including, visa, ID, office space, library or gym access, etc.
